Abstract:
Following examination of the Gestapo files from the areas of Płock and Ciechanów, in Mazovia (north of Warsaw), shows how the Gestapo controlled the Jewish population concentrated in numerous ghettos during the final months before their deportation in 1942. The files also show the tactics of survival resorted to by the ghetto Jews - moving to another, seemingly secure, ghetto; flight to the countryside; bartering with the non-Jewish population, etc. They also provide information on the attitudes of Poles to the genocide of the Jews. Dwells on several cases of rescue, carried out by Poles or by Jews posing as Poles.
