Abstract:
A paper delivered at the conference on the "Inquisition of the Americas" in Tucson, Arizona, January 1991. Discusses the Converso community, particularly in Mexico during the colonial era, including the role of the Inquisition. States that the Inquisition generally overlooked the Conversos, except between 1589-96 (when 200 persons were tried for the crime of Judaizing), and 1642-49. Contends that present-day New Mexico was the focus of Converso settlement. There are indications that there were expeditions of Crypto-Jews from central Mexico and Nuevo Leon who aimed to escape the Inquisition in the 1580s-90s, as well as a strong Converso presence among new colonists after the Reconquest (1692-93).
