Abstract:
Describes the contents of a booklet published in 1985 - "Theology and Racism", edited by Kenneth Leech - containing four articles, three dealing with the Christian sources of antisemitism (by Bishop of Salisbury John Austin Baker, Rosemary Radford Ruether, and John Pawlikowski). Ruether, summarizing the history of Christian persecution of the Jews, reiterates her thesis, stated in "Faith and Fratricide" (1974), that New Testament anti-Judaism is the source of modern sociological antisemitism. Baker states that antisemitism stems from early Christian sources, but that Christianity is not a racist religion, and is therefore superior to Judaism. Pawlikowski discusses recent historiography of the New Testament and early Christianity, contending that the New Testament is not antisemitic, but that antisemitism arose from distorted Christian interpretations of the Scriptures, particularly the charge of deicide. Concludes that a concerted effort is being made by some Christian theologians to defend the New Testament, and particularly the doctrine of supersession which they cannot admit is a mistake, just as they cannot recognize the legitimate existence of Israel.
