Abstract:
Traces the struggle of the "racial victims" of Nazism - the Jews - to obtain equal recognition with the "political victims" (communists and socialists) in the Vereinigung der Verfolgten des Naziregimes (in the Soviet occupation zone), which lobbied for social benefits and compensation for its members. The Communist party, which dominated the organization, saw in the fight against antisemitism a tactic in the fight against fascism. For some years, the Jewish victims were in the majority and obtained concessions in their favor. There was also discussion on restitution of Jewish property. In 1948, however, party policy changed: Nazi antisemitism, it was now held, was a direct result of capitalism, and Jewish capitalists shared in the guilt; therefore, they were not entitled to restitution. The Jews were called upon to assimilate.
