Abstract:
In 1858 a Petersburg journalist, Vladimir Zotov, published an antisemitic article ("The West Russian Kikes and Their Current Situation") in his magazine "Illyustratsiya." The article was followed by critical reactions of two Jewish writers, M.I. Gorvits and I.A. Chatskin, in "Atenei" and "Russkii Vestnik." After Zotov's coarse answer to them, the two periodicals "Sankt-Peterburgskiye Vedomosti" and "Russkii Vestnik" published collective protests signed by many leading Russian intellectuals. In the liberal-democratic camp, the literary critic Dobrolyubov not only did not join the protests, but ridiculed them in 1859 in the satirical supplement to the leftist magazine "Sovremennik."
