Abstract:
Discusses the wave of ritual murder charges in the Russian-annexed Kingdom of Poland after Napoleon's war against Russia. Emphasizes the pro-Russian attitude of the Jewish population during the war in contrast to the Polish nobility's commitment to Napoleon. Argues that these opposing stands explain the increasing anti-Jewish policy of the administration in Poland after the war. The blood libels and other allegations of anti-Christian profanations were intended to discredit the Jewish communities in the eyes of the Russian authorities. Focuses on the blood libels in Grodno (1816) and Velizh (1823). See the response by Vladimir Frenkel, "V poiskakh menshevo zla" ["Looking for the Lesser Evil"] in "Kovcheg" 2 (1991) 442-449, sharply criticizing Dudakov for his conception and for factual mistakes. Frenkel also reflects on the nature of Jewish loyalty to a non-Jewish state.
