    Kurzfassung: "This volume presents the culmination of research on an almost ignored literary corpus: the translations into literary Italian of classical Hebrew texts made by Jews between 1550 and 1650. It includes dozens of poetical and philosophical texts and wisdom literature as well as dictionaries and biblical translations produced in what their authors viewed as a national tongue, common to Christians and Jews. In so doing, the authors/translators explicitly left behind the so-called Judeo-Italian. These texts, many of them being published for the first time, are studied in the context of intellectual and literary history. The book is an original contribution showing that the linguistic acculturation of German Jews in the late 18th century occurred in Italy 150 years earlier"

This book provides statistical and biographical insights in order to show how different the reasons for deciding to emigrate were and the extent to which successful emigration depended on a number of external factors
    Kurzfassung: Zwischen 1933-1941 verließ knapp die Hälfte der aufgrund ihrer jüdischen Wurzeln verfolgten Münchner Bürger ihre Heimatstadt, um sich im Ausland ein neues Leben aufzubauen. Was bewegte die Münchner Juden dazu, den Schritt in die Emigration zu wagen? Unter der offensichtlichen Antwort der Erfahrung nationalsozialistischer Verfolgung verborgen lag ein vielschichtiges Netz aus Beweggründen. Anhand von Statistiken zur jüdischen Emigration aus München sowie durch detaillierte Einblicke in die Schicksale von vier Münchner jüdischen Familien stellt dieses Buch dar, wie unterschiedlich Entscheidungsprozesse für oder gegen die Auswanderung waren und wie stark die erfolgreiche Durchführung einer Emigration von einer Vielzahl externer Faktoren abhing. Many of the interviewees rose to great prominence in their chosen career, such as the author and illustrator Judith Kerr, the actor Andrew Sachs, the photographer and cameraman Wolf Suschitzky, the violinist Norbert Brainin, and the publisher Elly Miller. The narratives of the interviewees tell of their common struggles as child or young adult refugees who had to forge new lives in a foreign country and they illuminate how each interviewee dealt with the challenges of forced emigration and the Holocaust. The next section is on authors and places of publication addressing such diverse topics as a much republished book opposed to gambling, authors of books on philology and on the massacres of tah-ve-tat (1648-49); of articles on diverse and disparate places of printing, Chierie, Hamburg, Offenbach, Verona, and Slavuta, generally small barely remembered publishers of interesting works, and in the last location properly identifying the printer of the highly regarded Slavuta press. Included is a section on Christian-Hebraism with articles on Altdorf where polemical books were published and another on William Wotten, a Christian vicar who published the first English translation of Mishnayot. The result is a wide-ranging series of articles highlighting the activities of early Hebrew presses and printers"--

    Kurzfassung: Ausgehend vom Gedenken an die Pogromnacht von 1938 untersucht der Band die Bedeutungswandlungen der Erinnerung an die Shoa und an die Geschichte jüdischen Lebens in Deutschland sowie die aktuellen Entwicklungen der erinnerungspolitischen Debatte, der Erinnerungsforschung und der Gedenkkultur. Im Mittelpunkt steht dabei die Frage nach den zukünftigen Formen und Inhalten des Erinnerns und seiner institutionellen Manifestationen in politischen Diskursen, in der Wissenschaft und in den Gedenkorten. Wie kann die Erinnerung an die jüdische Geschichte in Deutschland und Europa, an die Diskriminierung und Verfolgung der jüdischen Minderheit und an den Völkermord auch mehr als 80 Jahre nach der Pogromnacht aufrecht erhalten werden und wirksam bleiben?

    Kurzfassung: In eleven contributions, Visual Antisemitism in Central Europe, Imagery of Hatred deals with visual manifestations of antisemitism in Central Europe from the Middle Ages to the present day. The publication, which presents heretofore largely unknown materials, seeks responses from diverse perspectives to the question of the role of visuality in the development of antisemitic moods and political agendas that encouraged hatred towards Jews. The scope of visual anti-Judaism and antisemitism always was and still is very wide: from stereotypical depictions that can conceal an underlying message through humorous content, to clearly formulated assaults that aim to escalate animosity towards an imaginary collective enemy. The goal in both these cases is the exclusion of Jews from the majority society imagined as a monolithic whole, and the reification of a dividing line between "us" and "them". With its wide thematic and methodological range, this book offers a comprehensive image of the phenomenon of visual anti-Judaism and antisemitism and provides rich comparative material for the entire Central European region

    Kurzfassung: Nach dem Tod des berühmten Hofjuden Leffmann Behrens in Hannover übernahmen seine Enkel dessen Firma, doch wurden sie 1721 ohne Beweise von der kurfürstlichen Justiz wegen Bankrottbetrugs angeklagt. Sie bekannten auch unter Folter nichts und blieben fünf Jahre im Kerkerturm. Berndt Strobach präsentiert den Fall nach dem archivalischen Befund und analysiert ihn in juristischer, ökonomischer und psychologischer Hinsicht. Einer der beiden Enkel verfasste einen persönlichen Opferbericht auf Jiddisch, der in der Edition von Simon Neuberg im Band enthalten ist. Sie wird begleitet von der ausführlich kommentierten Transliteration sowie der Übersetzung des Autors ins Hochdeutsche. Man gewinnt Einblicke in vormoderne Rechtsverhältnisse, aber auch in die Lebensweise der jüdischen ökonomischen Elite. Die Megillah-Transliteration bietet die reizvolle Möglichkeit, Erlebnisse in einer Sprache nachzuvollziehen, wie sie ein Jahrtausend lang von deutschen Juden gesprochen wurde

    Kurzfassung: Der Centralverein deutscher Staatsbürger jüdischen Glaubens (C. V.) wurde 1893 als Reaktion auf den Antisemitismus im Kaiserreich gegründet. Ganz den Prinzipien des Liberalismus verpflichtet, war er der Ansicht, den Anfeindungen durch Aufklärung und juristische Gegenwehr begegnen zu können. Der schnelle Zuwachs überraschte, führte aber dazu, dass der Centralverein zu einer der größten jüdischen Organisationen wurde. Dieser Erfolg fußte nicht nur auf der Abwehrarbeit, vielmehr repräsentierte der Centralverein eine selbstbewusste jüdische Identität innerhalb der Gesellschaft. Diese Symbiose aus Deutschtum und Judentum entsprach der Mehrheit des deutschen Judentums und so wurde der C. V. zu einem Hauptprotagonisten des deutsch-jüdischen Kultursystems. Umso mehr wundert es, dass er in der bisherigen Forschung als Organisation, als Geistesströmung und auch als politischer Akteur bis heute unterrepräsentiert blieb und oftmals nur im Lichte der gescheiterten Abwehrarbeit betrachtet wurde

    Kurzfassung: "A varied collection of articles on early Hebrew printing, encompassing motifs on title pages such as lions, eagles, and fish as well as the entitling of Hebrew books. The next section is on authors and places of publication addressing such diverse topics as a much republished book opposed to gambling, authors of books on philology and on the massacres of tah-ve-tat (1648-49); of articles on diverse and disparate places of printing, Chierie, Hamburg, Offenbach, Verona, and Slavuta, generally small barely remembered publishers of interesting works, and in the last location properly identifying the printer of the highly regarded Slavuta press. Included is a section on Christian-Hebraism with articles on Altdorf where polemical books were published and another on William Wotten, a Christian vicar who published the first English translation of Mishnayot. The result is a wide-ranging series of articles highlighting the activities of early Hebrew presses and printers"--

Im Mittelpunkt steht dabei die Frage nach den zukünftigen Formen und Inhalten des Erinnerns und seiner institutionellen Manifestationen in politischen Diskursen, in der Wissenschaft und in den Gedenkorten. Wie kann die Erinnerung an die jüdische Geschichte in Deutschland und Europa, an die Diskriminierung und Verfolgung der jüdischen Minderheit und an den Völkermord auch mehr als 80 Jahre nach der Pogromnacht aufrecht erhalten werden und wirksam bleiben?

The text remained in manuscript for about four centuries until the Galician scholar Isaiah Sonne (1887-1960) published a Hebrew annotated edition of the chronicle in the 1930s. Making use of broad archival materials, Martina Mampieri reflects on the nature of this work, its historical background, and contents, providing a revised edition of the Hebrew text as well as the first unabridged English translation and commentary"--

    Kurzfassung: Im Frühjahr 1943 hatte die Gestapo die meisten der verbliebenen Juden aus dem Deutschen Reich deportiert und löste die letzten jüdischen Gemeinden auf. Neben einer größeren Zahl von in "Mischehe" lebenden Juden und ihren Kindern blieben einige tausend Untergetauchte zurück. Auf Befehl Hitlers kamen seit April 1944 zudem jüdische Zwangsarbeiter ins Reich, die in der Rüstungsproduktion eingesetzt wurden. Der Band dokumentiert ihr Schicksal genauso wie die Entwicklung der in Berlin koordinierten Politik der Judenverfolgung in Europa, die internationalen Reaktionen auf das Bekanntwerden der Verbrechen und die Haltung der deutschen Bevölkerung zum Massenmord an den Juden. Im Protektorat Böhmen und Mähren gab es in den beiden letzten Kriegsjahren nur noch wenige Juden außerhalb des Gettos Theresienstadt. Der Band schildert die antijüdische Politik der deutschen Behörden im Protektorat bis Mai 1945 und die Situation im Getto, das als Durchgangslager nach Auschwitz diente, von den Nationalsozialisten aber auch als Vorzeigegetto genutzt wurde, um die internationale Öffentlichkeit zu täuschen

It can be used by teachers, researchers, students, and all other interested parties. The edition comprises authentic testimony by persecutors, victims, and onlookers. These testimonies are furnished with academic annotations and the vast majority of them are published here for the first time in English. Volume 1 documents the persecution of the Jews between 1933 and 1937.     Kurzfassung: Die Holocaustforschung ist in den vergangenen Jahren um Forschungsansätze ergänzt worden, die als komparativ-postkolonial beschrieben werden können. Sie untersuchen die Geschichte von Nationalsozialismus und Holocaust aus der Perspektive einer postkolonialtheoretisch geschulten vergleichenden Genozidforschung. Eine grundlegende Überzeugung dieser Ansätze ist, dass der Nationalsozialismus nur adäquat verstanden werden kann, wenn man ihn in Bezug zur europäischen, speziell deutschen, Kolonialgeschichte setzt. Dabei würden sich strukturelle und ideologische Parallelen und Gemeinsamkeiten aufzeigen, die die Forschung bisher ignoriert habe. Steffen Klävers untersucht in seiner Studie, welches heuristische Potential solcherlei Zugänge für die NS- und Holocaustforschung besitzen. Dabei geht er einerseits auf historische, aber auch erinnerungskulturelle und modernitätstheoretische Ansätze ein. Er rekonstruiert die Argumentationstechniken dieser Ansätze kritisch und problematisiert Punkte, an denen sie mit zentralen Erkenntnissen der NS- und Holocaustforschung brechen

    Kurzfassung: "In The Concept of the Elect Nation in Byzantium, Shay Eshel shows how the Old Testament model of the ancient Israelites was a prominent factor in the evolution of Roman-Byzantine national awareness between the 7th and 13th centuries. The Byzantines' interpretation of the 7th century epic events as manifestations of God's wrath enabled them to incorporate the events into a paradigm which they now embraced: the Old Testament paradigm of the Israelite Elect Nation's complex relationship with God, a cyclic relation of sin, wrath, punishment, repentance and salvation. The Elect Nation concept enabled the Byzantines to express the shift in their collective identity toward a shrunken, yet more clearly defined, national awareness"--

Deutsche Turn- und Sportvereine und ihre Verbände zählten zu den Wegbereitern / Vorreitern der Arisierung der deutschen Gesellschaft nach der nationalsozialistischen Machtübernahme. Sie waren Akteure in dem politischen und gesellschaftlichen Wandlungsprozess. Die freiwillige Einführung des Arierparagraphen bereits im Frühjahr 1933 in zahlreichen Vereinen und Verbänden - zu einem Zeitpunkt als sich die neue nationalsozialistische Sportführung noch nicht etabliert hatte -, war ein erster Schritt auf dem Wege des beispiellosen Zivilisationsbruchs. Die Dokumentensammlung bietet einen umfassenden Überblick über die rechtlichen Vorgaben deutscher Turn- und Sportvereine und ihrer Verbände bezüglich der Diskriminierung und Ausgrenzung der jüdischen Sportlerinnen und Sportler in den 1930er und 1940er Jahren. Darüber hinaus werden Vorgaben, Beschlüsse etc. kommunaler und staatlicher Einrichtungen sowie der NSDAP und ihrer Organisationen die jüdischen Sportlerinnen und Sportler betreffend aufgeführt.

    Kurzfassung: "In the last two decades a large amount of previously secret documents on Jewish issues emerged from the newly opened Communist archives. The selection of these papers published in the volume and stemming mostly from Hungarian archives will shed light on a period of Jewish history that is largely ignored because much of the current scholarship treats the Shoah as the end of Jewish history in the region. The documents introduced and commented by the editor of the volume, András Kovács, will give insight into the conditions and constraints under which the Jewish communities, first of all, the largest Jewish community of the region, the Hungarian one, had to survive in the time of the post-Stalinist Communist dictatorship. They may shed light on the ways that 'Jewish policy' of the Soviet bloc countries was coordinated and orchestrated from Moscow and by the single countries. The archival material will prove that the ruling communist parties were restlessly preoccupied with the 'Jewish question.' This preoccupation, which kept the whole issue alive in the decades of communist rule, explains to a great extent its open reemergence in the time of transition and in the post-communist period"--Provided by publisher

    Kurzfassung: The study of time, astronomy, and calendars, has been closely intertwined in the history of Western culture and, more particularly, Jewish tradition. Jewish interest in astronomy was fostered by the Jewish calendar, which was based on the courses of the sun and the moon, whilst astronomy, in turn, led to a better understanding of how time should be reckoned.     Kurzfassung: The Economic History of European Jews attempts to make sense of the economic foundations of Jewish life in the different parts of late antique and early medieval Europe. In the first part Michael Toch describes the demographic arc, decline, subsequent rise, and spatial distribution of Jewish populations. This data is then broadened to include the range of economic activities. The second part analyses the actual share of Jews in different branches of the economy. This includes the idea of their pioneer role and the notion of an intercontinental network of Jewish commerce, the phenomenon of Jews in agriculture and entrepreneurship, gender roles and the household mode of production, and the difficult subject of the significance of minority status for economic activity, among other subjects. \'This is the most up-to-date scholarly reassessment of a century of both overly optimistic and occasionally negative interpretations of Jewish population and economic activities, a boon to students and researchers of the first millennium of the Jewish experience in Europe, and an interesting read for the general public.\' S.
