    Abstract: Jews and Armenians are often perceived as peoples with similar tragic historical experiences. Not only were both groups forced into statelessness and a life outside their homelands for centuries, in the 20th century, in the shadow of war, they were threatened with collective annihilation. Thus far, academic approaches to these two "classical" diasporas have been quite different. Moreover, Armenian and Jewish questions posed during the 19th and 20th centuries have usually been treated separately. The conference “We Will Live After Babylon” that took place in Hanover in February 2019, addressed this gap in research and was one of the first initiatives to deal directly with Jewish and Armenian historical experiences, between expulsion, exile and annihilation, in a comparative framework. The contributions in this volume take on multidisciplinary approaches relating to the conference’s central themes: diaspora, minority issues and genocide

    Abstract: Zwischen 1933-1941 verließ knapp die Hälfte der aufgrund ihrer jüdischen Wurzeln verfolgten Münchner Bürger ihre Heimatstadt, um sich im Ausland ein neues Leben aufzubauen. Was bewegte die Münchner Juden dazu, den Schritt in die Emigration zu wagen? Unter der offensichtlichen Antwort der Erfahrung nationalsozialistischer Verfolgung verborgen lag ein vielschichtiges Netz aus Beweggründen. Anhand von Statistiken zur jüdischen Emigration aus München sowie durch detaillierte Einblicke in die Schicksale von vier Münchner jüdischen Familien stellt dieses Buch dar, wie unterschiedlich Entscheidungsprozesse für oder gegen die Auswanderung waren und wie stark die erfolgreiche Durchführung einer Emigration von einer Vielzahl externer Faktoren abhing. Den Lesern zeigen sich so nicht nur Charakteristika der Münchner jüdischen Emigration auf, sondern sie werden angeregt, über offensichtliche und verborgene Einflüsse auf Emigrationsströme in historischen wie zeitgenössischen Kontexten nachzudenken

    Abstract: Der Centralverein deutscher Staatsbürger jüdischen Glaubens (C. V.) wurde 1893 als Reaktion auf den Antisemitismus im Kaiserreich gegründet. Ganz den Prinzipien des Liberalismus verpflichtet, war er der Ansicht, den Anfeindungen durch Aufklärung und juristische Gegenwehr begegnen zu können. Der schnelle Zuwachs überraschte, führte aber dazu, dass der Centralverein zu einer der größten jüdischen Organisationen wurde. Dieser Erfolg fußte nicht nur auf der Abwehrarbeit, vielmehr repräsentierte der Centralverein eine selbstbewusste jüdische Identität innerhalb der Gesellschaft. Diese Symbiose aus Deutschtum und Judentum entsprach der Mehrheit des deutschen Judentums und so wurde der C. V. zu einem Hauptprotagonisten des deutsch-jüdischen Kultursystems. Umso mehr wundert es, dass er in der bisherigen Forschung als Organisation, als Geistesströmung und auch als politischer Akteur bis heute unterrepräsentiert blieb und oftmals nur im Lichte der gescheiterten Abwehrarbeit betrachtet wurde

    Abstract: Nach dem Tod des berühmten Hofjuden Leffmann Behrens in Hannover übernahmen seine Enkel dessen Firma, doch wurden sie 1721 ohne Beweise von der kurfürstlichen Justiz wegen Bankrottbetrugs angeklagt. Sie bekannten auch unter Folter nichts und blieben fünf Jahre im Kerkerturm. Berndt Strobach präsentiert den Fall nach dem archivalischen Befund und analysiert ihn in juristischer, ökonomischer und psychologischer Hinsicht. Einer der beiden Enkel verfasste einen persönlichen Opferbericht auf Jiddisch, der in der Edition von Simon Neuberg im Band enthalten ist. Sie wird begleitet von der ausführlich kommentierten Transliteration sowie der Übersetzung des Autors ins Hochdeutsche. Man gewinnt Einblicke in vormoderne Rechtsverhältnisse, aber auch in die Lebensweise der jüdischen ökonomischen Elite. Die Megillah-Transliteration bietet die reizvolle Möglichkeit, Erlebnisse in einer Sprache nachzuvollziehen, wie sie ein Jahrtausend lang von deutschen Juden gesprochen wurde

    Abstract: The Yiddish Theater Stage as a Temporary Home takes us through the fascinating life and career of the most important comic duo in Yiddish Theater, Shimen Dzigan and Isroel Shumacher. Spanning over the course of half a century – from the beginning of their work at the Ararat avant-garde Yiddish theater in Łodz, Poland to their Warsaw theatre – they produced bold, groundbreaking political satire. The book further discusses their wanderings through the Soviet Union during the Second World War and their attempt to revive Jewish culture in Poland after the Holocaust. It finally describes their time in Israel, first as guest performers and later as permanent residents. Despite the restrictions on Yiddish actors in Israel, the duo insisted on performing in their language and succeeded in translating the new Israeli reality into unique and timely satire. In the 1950s, they voiced a unique – among the Hebrew stages – political and cultural critique. Dzigan continued to perform on his own and with other Israeli artists until his death in 1980

    Abstract: Complicated Complicity is about the forms taken, motives and spectrum of actions of European collaboration with the Nazis. State authorities, local military organizations and individual players in different countries and areas including France, Scandinavia, Lithuania, Poland, Ukraine, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, Greece, Italy, Portugal and the countries of the former Yugoslavia are discussed in the context of the history of World War II, the history of occupation and everyday life and as an essential influencing factor in the Holocaust. New forms of right-wing populism, nationalism and growing intolerance of Jewish fellow citizens and minorities have made such historically sensitive studies considerably more difficult in many countries today. In this time of increasing historical revisionism in Europe, such elucidating discourse is particularly relevant

    Abstract: This book explores the fraught aftermath of the German Jewish conversionary experience through the story of one family as it grapples with the meaning of its Jewish origins in a post-Holocaust, post-conversionary milieu. Utilizing archival family texts and multiple interviews spanning three generations, beginning with the author’s German Jewish parents, 1940s refugees, and engaging the insights of contemporary scholars, the book traces the impact of a contested Jewish identity on the deconstruction and reconstruction of the Jewish self. The Holocaust as post-memory and the impact of the German Jewish culture personified by the author’s parents leads to a retrieval of a lost Jewish identity, postmodern in its implications, reinforcing the concept of Judaism as ultimately a family affair. Focusing on the personal to illuminate a complex historical phenomenon, this book proposes a new cultural history that challenges conventional boundaries of what is Jewish and what is not

    Abstract: Of about a million Jews that arrived to Israel from the (former) USSR after 1989 some 12% left the country by the end of 2017. It is estimated that about a half of them left "back" for the FSU, and the rest for the USA, Canada and the Western Europe. The book provides a comprehensive analysis of this specific Jewish Israeli Diaspora group through cutting-edge approaches in the social sciences, and examines the settlement patterns of Israeli Russian-speaking emigrants, their identity, social demographic profile, reasons of emigration, their economic achievements, identification, and status vis-à-vis host Jewish and non-Jewish environment, vision of Israel, migration interests and behavior, as well as their social and community networks, elites and institutions. Vladimir Ze’ev Khanin makes a significant contribution to migration theory, academic understanding of transnational Diasporas, and sheds a new light on the identity and structure of contemporary Israeli society. The book is based on the unique statistics from Israeli and other Government sources and sociological information obtained from the author’s first of this kind on-going study of Israeli Russian-speaking emigrant communities in different regions of the world

    Abstract: In eleven contributions, Visual Antisemitism in Central Europe, Imagery of Hatred deals with visual manifestations of antisemitism in Central Europe from the Middle Ages to the present day. The publication, which presents heretofore largely unknown materials, seeks responses from diverse perspectives to the question of the role of visuality in the development of antisemitic moods and political agendas that encouraged hatred towards Jews. The scope of visual anti-Judaism and antisemitism always was and still is very wide: from stereotypical depictions that can conceal an underlying message through humorous content, to clearly formulated assaults that aim to escalate animosity towards an imaginary collective enemy. The goal in both these cases is the exclusion of Jews from the majority society imagined as a monolithic whole, and the reification of a dividing line between "us" and "them". With its wide thematic and methodological range, this book offers a comprehensive image of the phenomenon of visual anti-Judaism and antisemitism and provides rich comparative material for the entire Central European region

    Abstract: In April-May 1940 the German Wehrmacht invaded Northern and Western Europe. The subsequent occupation of Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, and France brought the Jewish population of these countries – both established residents and refugees – under German control. From autumn 1941 in Luxembourg and from spring/summer 1942 in Belgium, the Netherlands and occupied France, Jews were required to wear the ‘Jewish star’ and many were subjected to forced labour. By mid-1942, deportations from Luxembourg and France to the ghettos and extermination camps in occupied Eastern Europe had already begun, while in the other occupied countries they were imminent. In April 1942 Alfred Oppenheimer, the Jewish elder in Luxembourg, wrote: ‘A dreadful fate hangs over our community again. The worst that can happen has now happened and the Poland transport is a certainty.’ This volume covers Norway and Western Europe during the period from the German invasion to mid 1942 (developments in Denmark for this period are documented in vol. 12) and records how Jews in these parts of Europe were excluded from society and stripped of their rights, livelihoods, and property. Letters and diary entries by the persecuted Jews detail life under German occupation and the attempts by many Jews to emigrate. The sources show how Jewish organizations sought to alleviate the impact of persecution, and how the German occupiers and local collaborators targeted Jews with increasingly stringent measures and clamped down on any form of resistance

    Abstract: Ausgehend vom Gedenken an die Pogromnacht von 1938 untersucht der Band die Bedeutungswandlungen der Erinnerung an die Shoa und an die Geschichte jüdischen Lebens in Deutschland sowie die aktuellen Entwicklungen der erinnerungspolitischen Debatte, der Erinnerungsforschung und der Gedenkkultur. Im Mittelpunkt steht dabei die Frage nach den zukünftigen Formen und Inhalten des Erinnerns und seiner institutionellen Manifestationen in politischen Diskursen, in der Wissenschaft und in den Gedenkorten. Wie kann die Erinnerung an die jüdische Geschichte in Deutschland und Europa, an die Diskriminierung und Verfolgung der jüdischen Minderheit und an den Völkermord auch mehr als 80 Jahre nach der Pogromnacht aufrecht erhalten werden und wirksam bleiben?

    Abstract: The edition collects and presents all papyri and ostraca from the Ptolemaic period, connected to Jews and Judaism, published since 1957. It is a follow-up to the Corpus Papyrorum Judaicarum (= CPJ) of the 1950s and 60s, edited by Victor Tcherikover, which had consisted of three volumes – I devoted to the Ptolemaic period; II to the Early Roman period (until 117 CE); and III to the Late Roman and Byzantine periods. The present book, CPJ vol. IV, is the first in a new trilogy, and is devoted to the Ptolemaic period. The present and upcoming volumes supplement the original CPJ. They present over 300 papyri that have been published since 1957. They also include papyri in languages other than Greek (Hebrew, Aramaic, Demotic), and literary papyri which had not been included in the old CPJ. Aside from quite a number of papyri in these categories, the present volume (of over 100 documents) includes 21 papyri from Herakleopolis in Middle-Egypt that record the existence of a Jewish self-ruling body – the politeuma. These papyri put an end to a long-standing dispute over whether such a Jewish institution had ever existed in Egypt

    Abstract: Im Frühjahr 1943 hatte die Gestapo die meisten der verbliebenen Juden aus dem Deutschen Reich deportiert und löste die letzten jüdischen Gemeinden auf. Neben einer größeren Zahl von in "Mischehe" lebenden Juden und ihren Kindern blieben einige tausend Untergetauchte zurück. Auf Befehl Hitlers kamen seit April 1944 zudem jüdische Zwangsarbeiter ins Reich, die in der Rüstungsproduktion eingesetzt wurden. Der Band dokumentiert ihr Schicksal genauso wie die Entwicklung der in Berlin koordinierten Politik der Judenverfolgung in Europa, die internationalen Reaktionen auf das Bekanntwerden der Verbrechen und die Haltung der deutschen Bevölkerung zum Massenmord an den Juden. Im Protektorat Böhmen und Mähren gab es in den beiden letzten Kriegsjahren nur noch wenige Juden außerhalb des Gettos Theresienstadt. Der Band schildert die antijüdische Politik der deutschen Behörden im Protektorat bis Mai 1945 und die Situation im Getto, das als Durchgangslager nach Auschwitz diente, von den Nationalsozialisten aber auch als Vorzeigegetto genutzt wurde, um die internationale Öffentlichkeit zu täuschen

It can be used by teachers, researchers, students, and all other interested parties. The edition comprises authentic testimony by persecutors, victims, and onlookers. These testimonies are furnished with academic annotations and the vast majority of them are published here for the first time in English. Volume 3 documents the persecution of the Jews in the German Reich after the start of the Second World War and in the ‘Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia’, created in March 1939, until September 1941. It reveals the increasing isolation of the German and Czechoslovak Jews but also the perpetrators’ plans up to the eve of systematic deportations

    Abstract: Napoleon's invasion of the Middle East marks the beginning of the modern era in the region. This book traces the developments that led to the making of a new and separate geographical-political entity in the Middle East known as Eretz Israel and the establishment of the State of Israel within its bounds. Thus, its time frame runs from Napoleon's invasion of Eretz Israel / Palestine in 1799 to the establishment of Israel in 1948-1949. Eretz Israel as the formal name of a separate entity in the modern era first appeared in the early translations into Hebrew of the Balfour Declaration, while in the original document the country was referred to as "Palestine." During the period of Ottoman rule the territory that would in time be called Eretz Israel / Palestine was not a separate political unit. Among Jews, use of "Eretz Israel" increased only after the beginning of Zionist aliyot. Had the Zionist movement not arisen, it is doubtful whether the development to which this study is devoted would have occurred. The motivating force behind that process is without doubt the Zionist element. That is why Jews are the major protagonists in this book

The work illustrates the contemporary contexts, the dynamics, and the intermediate stages of the political and social processes that led to this unprecedented mass crime. It can be used by teachers, researchers, students, and all other interested parties. The edition comprises authentic testimony by persecutors, victims, and onlookers. These testimonies are furnished with academic annotations and the vast majority of them are published here for the first time in English. Volume 3 documents the persecution of the Jews in the German Reich after the start of the Second World War and in the ‘Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia’, created in March 1939, until September 1941. It reveals the increasing isolation of the German and Czechoslovak Jews but also the perpetrators’ plans up to the eve of systematic deportations

    Abstract: Jewish life in Europe has undergone dramatic changes and transformations within the 20th century and also the last two decades. The phenomenon of the dual position of the Jewish minority in relation to the majority, not entirely unusual for Jewish Diaspora communities, manifested itself most distinctly on the European continent. This unique Jewish experience of the ambiguous position of insider and outsider may provide valuable views on contemporary European reality and identity crisis. The book focuses inter alia on the main common denominators of contemporary Jewish life in Central Europe, such as an intense confrontation with the heritage of the Holocaust and unrelenting antisemitism on the one hand and on the other hand, huge appreciation of traditional Jewish learning and culture by a considerable part of non-Jewish Europeans.     Abstract: Research on Jewish settlement of the Land of Israel in the modern era has long neglected the sea and its shores. This book explores the Yishuv's hold on the Mediterranean and other bodies of water during the British Mandate in Palestine and the Zionist "maritime revolution," a shift from a focus on land-based development to an embrace of the sea as a source of security, economic growth, clandestine immigration (haapala), and national pride. The transformation is tracked in four spheres - ports, seamanship, fishery, and education - and viewed within the context of the Jewish/Arab conflict, internal Yishuv politics, and the Second World War. Archives, memoirs, press, and secondary sources all help illuminate the Zionist Movement's road to maritime sovereignty. By the State of Israel's founding in 1948, the Yishuv had a flourishing nautical presence: a national shipping company, control over the country's three active ports, maritime athletics, fish farming, and a nautical training school

Sie untersuchen die Geschichte von Nationalsozialismus und Holocaust aus der Perspektive einer postkolonialtheoretisch geschulten vergleichenden Genozidforschung. Steffen Klävers untersucht in seiner Studie, welches heuristische Potential solcherlei Zugänge für die NS- und Holocaustforschung besitzen.     Abstract: ‘‘‘Who am I?’ and ‘Who are we?’ are the existential, foundational questions in our lives. In our modern world, there is no construct more influential than ‘identity’ – whether as individuals or as groups. The concept of group identity is the focal point of a research group named “A Question of Identity” at the Mandel Scholion Interdisciplinary Research Center in the Humanities at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The papers collected in this volume represent the proceedings of a January 2017 conference organized by the research group which dealt with identity formation in six contextual settings: Ethno-religious identities in light of the archaeological record; Second Temple period textual records on Diaspora Judaism; Jews and Christians in Sasanian Persia; minorities in the Persian achaemenid period; Inter-ethnic dialogue in pre-1948 Palestine; and redefinitions of Christian Identity in the Early Modern period

    Abstract: In dieser Untersuchung zur deutsch-jüdischen Bildungsgeschichte wird die Wirkungsgeschichte der Hascharath Zwi Schule in Halberstadt rekonstruiert, der einzigen privaten jüdischen Elementarschule der ehemaligen Provinz Sachsen. Das wegweisende Schulkonzept ihres Gründers Hirsch Isaac Borchert bestand in der Vermittlung religiöser und weltlicher Bildung und spiegelt im Zeitalter von Emanzipation und Akkulturation das Streben nach Bildung und gesellschaftlichem Aufstieg wider. Berücksichtigung fanden hierbei sowohl innerjüdische und lokalspezifische Entwicklungen wie auch die im 19. Jahrhundert eingeleiteten staatlichen Maßnahmen im jüdischen Bildungswesen. Die Studie verdeutlicht darüber hinaus das kooperative Verhältnis zwischen staatlicher Schulbehörde und privater Bildungseinrichtung und zeigt das besondere Engagement und die Entschlossenheit der Akteure, religiöse Traditionen mit den Modernisierungsbestrebungen im jüdischen Schul- und Erziehungswesen in Einklang zu bringen.

Die freiwillige Einführung des Arierparagraphen bereits im Frühjahr 1933 in zahlreichen Vereinen und Verbänden - zu einem Zeitpunkt als sich die neue nationalsozialistische Sportführung noch nicht etabliert hatte -, war ein erster Schritt auf dem Wege des beispiellosen Zivilisationsbruchs. Die Dokumentensammlung bietet einen umfassenden Überblick über die rechtlichen Vorgaben deutscher Turn- und Sportvereine und ihrer Verbände bezüglich der Diskriminierung und Ausgrenzung der jüdischen Sportlerinnen und Sportler in den 1930er und 1940er Jahren.     Abstract: During the first half of the 19th century, light theater typically portrayed Jews as objects of mockery or morally questionable minor characters. This was also true of Kalisch’s farces. Yet it is thanks to his farce, “One of our people,” which enjoyed success well into the 20th century, that we see a Jewish main character portrayed in an entirely positive manner, thus casting new light on Jewish life in a non-Jewish environment.
    Abstract: In der ersten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts erscheinen Juden im Unterhaltungstheater oft als lächerliche, verspottete oder moralisch zweifelhafte Nebenfiguren. So auch in David Kalischs Possen. Doch ihm ist es zu danken, dass in seiner bis ins 20. Jh. hinein erfolgreichen Posse „Einer von unsere Leut’“ eine rein positiv gezeichnete jüdische Hauptfigur auftritt und dabei Aspekte des Lebens von Juden in nicht-jüdischer Umgebung thematisiert werden.
