Abstract:
A report on antisemitism in the USA in 2003. There were the same number of antisemitic incidents (1,557) as in 2002, but antisemitic attitudes were at an all-time low. Extremist groups were few and had limited impact, although antisemitic web sites increased. Comments briefly on a few neo-Nazi groups. Discusses three cases of Black-Jewish tension, one of Hispanic antisemitism, and some Muslim scapegoating of Jews. Discusses conflict between Christians and Jews in anticipation of the 2004 screening of Gibson's film "The Passion of the Christ", as well as concern among U.S. Jews about anti-Israel and anti-Jewish expressions abroad. Refers to analyses, articles, books, and conferences that dealt with the "new antisemitism". Notes that the association of America's war against Iraq with Jewish influence has raised antisemitic canards of dual loyalty, warmongering, and a Jewish conspiracy that controls superpowers like the USA. On college campuses, after a three-year upward trend, there was a decline in the number and virulence of anti-Jewish manifestations. While Jewish community defense organizations continued to oppose expressions of antisemitism, doubts whether their expensive prejudice-reduction programs were successful.
