Abstract:
During the first half of the 20th century, the small, highly acculturated and Anglophile Adelaide Jewish community was torn between two principles - patriotism toward the British Empire and Jewish solidarity, but it accorded top priority to the former. Discusses the attitude of the community to the plight of East European Jews during the First World War. Focuses on the Holocaust period, but relates also to the postwar period when the State of Israel was established. In the 1940s, the community intervened on behalf of Jewish refugees interned in the Loveday, Hay, and Tatura camps, and gave them aid.
