Abstract: "Stated Memory: East Germany and the Holocaust investigates Communist Germany's attempt to explain the Holocaust within a discursive framework that was at once German and Marxist. The book probes the contradictions and self deceptions arising from East Germany's official self-understanding as an enlightened, modern society in which Jewishness did not constitute "difference" or otherness. The study examines East German historiography of the Holocaust, including its reflection in schoolbooks; analyzes East German concentration camp memorials; discusses the situation of Jews who remained in East Germany; and surveys East German cinematic and literary responses to the Nazi murder of the Jews. The book shows that regardless of the sincerity of the individuals involved in constructing these various forms of memory, the state attempted to orchestrate Holocaust discourse for its own purposes. It also argues that authors and filmmakers at times undermined the state-sponsored orthodox discourse, and that they created some of the most important postwar German confrontations with the Holocaust."--BOOK JACKET.

Abstract: "In Paying for the Past, physician and historian Christian Pross untangles the complicated history of reparations in West Germany, from the American military government's 1947 Law Number 59 (Restitution of Property Stolen in the Course of the "Aryanization of the Economy") to West Germany's Federal Restitution Law of 1957 and into the 1970s. When first published in German in 1988, Pross's landmark research caused a furor because it exposed the hostility of the West German people and the bitter political opposition within the government toward reparations legislation and the Holocaust victims seeking restitution." "Paying for the Past uncovers the inconsistencies, distortions, and veiled anti-Semitic attitudes in West Germany's official version of its reparations history. Now available in English for the first time, this edition of Paying for the Past contains a new preface by the author and an afterword by medical ethicist Erich Loewy, which provides an international context for the ethical issues raised by the West German experiences with reparations."--BOOK JACKET.

Abstract: A history of the Holocaust in Greece and of Jewish participation in Greek partisan warfare during World War II, based largely on personal accounts of survivors. Describes the development of events that ended with the deportations of Jews to death camps, from the German zone of occupation (which included Salonika), the Bulgarian zone, and the Italian zone (which included Athens). Although the Allies already knew about the death camps, nobody warned the Greek Jews. Many Greeks, Italians, Bulgarians, and others sympathized with Jews and attempted to help them, but very few survivors owe their lives to Christian rescuers. The best way to survive was to join the resistance. Pp. 127-326 contain excerpts from memoirs of Jewish survivors, including some who survived Auschwitz and other camps, and resistance fighters. Pp. 329-402 contain Matsas' memoirs. He was born in 1930 in Ioannina and survived the war hiding in a mountain village with his parents and sister

Abstract: The events of the Holocaust have been well documented. Almost ninety percent of European Jewry was murdered. But for the survivors, the psychological impact of the Holocaust has stretched beyond 1945. An innocence has been eradicated. A view of their fellow man has been indelibly imprinted: "What did the world learn from the Holocaust?" a survivor was asked. "What the world learned from the Holocaust is that you can kill six million Jews and no one will care." The Aftermath offers a perspective of how one who has lived with terror for years is able to avoid paralysis and move forward. It is a book about how people live with gnawing doubts and uncertainty concerning their past actions and inactions, doubts and uncertainties which can cause them to feel ambivalent about their very existence. It is a tale of the anguish they feel because they possess firsthand knowledge of the evil in people, which so unjustly struck and deprived them of what was rightly theirs. For while Holocaust survivors seem, in most ways, to be like you and me, they are also aware of a subterranean world which may afflict them without warning. It is far easier to extinguish human beings than to extinguish their memories. This is also a book about the incredible resilience of human beings. The survivors you will hear from provide observations of how, after being reduced to less than zero during the formative years of adolescence and young adulthood, men and women were able to revive a self-respect which had been under continuous siege. And because survivors of the Holocaust will soon be gone, this is a unique opportunity to observe a case study of the elasticity of the limits of endurance, and the human need and capacity to reassert a vigorous life. As the mortality of survivors overwhelms them as a group, it may be not only the first but also the final occasion we will have to hear them describe their inner lives.

Abstract: Death camps are the most enduring image of the Holocaust, but they were only the final expression of a destruction process that began in 1933. In that year the Nazi regime mobilized members of an entire society to destroy their neighbors. Lawmakers, judges, attorneys, and the rest of the legal system played a crucial role in reassuring "good Germans" that a war on Jews was legitimate. Using original decrees, court decisions, and first-hand recollections of participants, Nazi Justiz documents how the German legal system transformed itself into a criminal organization. We also see not only how the legal system shaped everyday life, but how good Germans and the business community benefited from the Holocaust. Germany in the 1930s - before the war - is emphasized. Such emphasis demonstrates that a Holocaust can happen in any country sharing the heritage of Western civilization, and warns of the inevitable outcome once ordinary people are targeted in a process of destruction.

Abstract: When Hitler marched into Austria in March 1938, the country's Jewish population numbered nearly 200,000. Those Jews who were able to find refuge in neutral countries were safe; those who fled to countries subsequently overrun by the Nazis were eventually hunted down. Between 1938 and 1945, more than 50,000 Austrian Jews were deported; no more than 2,000 returned. The estimate of Austrian Jews caught by the Nazis in neighboring countries is 17,000. Therefore, more than one-third of Austria's Jewish population were killed during this period. After extensive research of the records at the various documentation centers and using primary as well as secondary sources, Schneider relates how Jews lived in Austria until either flight or deportation; she follows the transports to their destination and, using the fate of family and friends as examples, describes the experiences in the camps, as well as the homecoming of the survivors. In the process, Schneider provides the most detailed account available on the fate of exiles and victims from Austria. She concludes with a complete list of all camp survivors. A gripping historical record for all students of the Holocaust and modern European history.

Abstract: Genia spent two years in Auschwitz. Ze'ev fought with the Partisans. Olga hid in the Aryan section of Warsaw. Anya fled to Russia. Laura lived in Libya under the Italian fascist regime. All five survived the Holocaust, immigrated to Israel, and started families there. How the traumatic experience of these survivors has been transmitted, even transformed, from one generation to the next is the focus of Fear and Hope. From survivors to grandchildren, members of these families narrate their own stories across three generations, revealing their different ways of confronting the original trauma of the Holocaust. Dan Bar-On's biographical analyses of these life stories identify several main themes that run throughout: how family members reconstruct major life events in their narratives, what stories remain untold, and what is remembered and what forgotten. Together, these life stories and analyses eloquently explore the inter-generational reverberations of the Holocaust, particularly the ongoing tension between achieving renewal in the present and preserving the past.

Abstract: Prompted by the suicides of Jean Amery and Primo Levi, Harold Kaplan sought to ask what the Holocaust can be said to affirm even in the face of its overwhelming negation of meaning. "I wrote this book," he explains, "to translate the Holocaust out of the moral and intellectual shock which contemplates the alienation of humanity from itself. I wished to understand the 'crime against humanity' as a viable category of the moral reason. And l wished to respond to the written testimony of Holocaust victims and survivors as if the issue of their survival were present to us today."
Abstract: Kaplan simulates the response to a long visit to the new Holocaust museum in Washington, D.C., which, crucially for Kaplan, is sited in direct view of the Jefferson and Lincoln monuments, powerful symbols of humanist democracy. He insists the Holocaust be viewed not only in terms of personal ethics but modern political ethics as well: for Kaplan the affirmative legacy of the Holocaust is its focus on the dangers of nationalism, racism, and all forms of separatist group identities. It challenges the historicism, cults of power, and scientistic politics of our modernity. And it challenges the moral passivity and relativism that afflict people as they confront mass politics, whether in Western or Eastern societies
Abstract: With the opening of the Holocaust museum, a debate has been sparked, one that reflects the larger debate over the Holocaust's "meaning," its translatability for ordinary human understanding. Some deny any possible response except that of overwhelming grief and horror. For others, the "lesson" of the Holocaust implies, in the words of Robert Nozick, that "mankind has fallen....Humanity has lost its claim to continue." As long as we have a civilization, the moral life of mankind and the political structure of human institutions will remain endlessly tormented by the Holocaust. That, Kaplan tells us, is the ultimate content of its "meaning," and is what makes the discussion of "meaning" much more than a mourner's symposium

Abstract: Simon Wiesenthal spent four and a half years in Nazi concentration camps during World War II. Eighty-nine family members and relatives were exterminated, and he himself ended the war a living skeleton. Almost fifty years later, Wiesenthal remains undauntedly committed to the cause of justice for the Jewish people and to the pursuit of Nazi war criminals. The cases he has pursued are many - he has brought eleven hundred Nazis to trial - and his name has frequently hit world headlines in connection with such figures as Adolf Eichmann, Franz Stangl, Josef Mengele, and Kurt Waldheim. Of his enormous personal courage there is no doubt. But so long after the war, is Wiesenthal's work still important? Does it have meaning? Is he making a positive contribution to post-Holocaust Judaism? Wiesenthal's answer is resolute: "We live in a modern world. We know there is pollution. The air is bad, the water is bad, the skies are dirty. But there is another sort of pollution that people ignore. In many countries people are living between murderers, and that is the biggest pollution of all." This book by internationally known author and journalist Alan Levy - an acquaintance of Wiesenthal for many years - is the first critical examination of Wiesenthal's life and work. The story of Wiesenthal's pursuit of war criminals - often detailed in Wiesenthal's own words - offers reading as exciting as any thriller. But The Wiesenthal File is much more than that. It is an examination by an independent-minded Jew of the work of one of the greatest Jewish figures of our century.

Abstract: The recording and the inescapable task of judging great wrongs in the past presents historians with their most difficult assignment. For those who have either lived through such injustice or been in some way responsible for it the impositions of memory are painful and inescapable. Memory shapes the future, and the recollections of past suffering haunt and may overwhelm future generations
Abstract: In 1938 the National Socialist Party in Germany began the final preparations for the systematic genocide of the Jews throughout Europe. For the Jews, whose national loyalties had long exceeded any ties of ethnicity, the programme of extermination was an act not merely of monstrous cruelty but of humiliation and treachery
Abstract: In this collection scholars, artists and writers consider the ways in which the events of 1938 to 1945 have been, might be, and will be remembered. The records of the Holocaust are vast and various, ranging from the museum at Auschwitz to the cartoons of Art Spiegelman, from the elegiac stories of Levi to the filmed testimonies of the death camp survivors. The perspectives brought to bear here are rich and various - impassioned, objective, personal, poetical, historical and philosophical

Abstract: A controversial and powerful work, this monumental history is the first to show the decisive impact of the Holocaust on the identity, ideology, and politics of Israel. Drawing on thousands of pages of newly declassified documents, as well as on diaries and interviews, journalist-historian Tom Segev tells the dramatic story of how the yishuv - the Jewish community of pre-Israel Palestine - confronted the rise of Nazi Germany and the Holocaust, and how Israeli society has dealt with the consequences since. With unflinching honesty, Segev examines the most sensitive and heretofore closed chapters of his country's history: the Zionists' problematic response to the Holocaust while it was happening; the new Jewish state's disturbing reception of Holocaust refugees, who found themselves despised by a society devoted to heroism and the "new man"; the revenge schemes against former Nazis, including a plot to poison the water systems of major German cities; the secret negotiations between Germany and Israel over reparations payments; and much more. As Segev masterfully traces the nation's struggles with this past - struggles fraught with emotion and saturated with politics - he also reveals how this charged legacy has at critical moments (the Exodus affair, the Eichmann trial, the Six-Day War, the case of John Demjanjuk) been molded and manipulated in accordance with the ideological requirements of the state. A vast hidden history, full of engrossing portraits of the major personalities - BenGurion, Begin, Nahum Goldmann - and rich with the details of everyday life, The Seventh Million shows the common goals and conflicting needs of which history is made, and how the bitter events of decades past continue to shape the experience not just of individuals but of a nation.

Abstract: Until now there has never been a systematic assessment of the "double jeopardy" of Jewish women in the Holocaust, because most of the chroniclers of this cruelest tragedy of modern history have been men. Yet for women, as scholar Myrna Goldenberg observes, "The hell was the same, but the horrors were different." Different Voices is the most thoroughgoing examination of women's experiences of the Holocaust ever compiled. It gathers together - for the first time in a single volume - the latest insights of scholars, the powerful testimonies of survivors, and the eloquent reflections of writers, theologians, and philosophers. Twenty-eight women in all speak of Hitler's "Final Solution," from the rising storm in prewar Germany to the terrors and privations of the camps, and of the everyday heroism that kept hope alive. Part One, "Voices of Experience," recounts the painful and poignant stories of survivors
Abstract: We hear Olga Lengyel's anguish at discovering that she had unwittingly sent her mother and son to the gas chamber; on recalling the brutality of Irma Griese, a stunningly beautiful SS officer; on witnessing the unspeakable "medical experiments" the Nazis conducted on women. We share Livia F. Britton's memory of hunger and terrible vulnerability as a naked thirteen-year-old at Auschwitz. We learn of the horrific price that Dr. Gisela Perl was forced to pay to save women's lives. Part Two, "Voices of Interpretation," offers the new insights of women scholars of the Holocaust, including evidence that the Nazis specifically preyed on women as the propagators of the Jewish race. Marion A. Kaplan describes the lives of a generation of Jewish women who thought that they were assimilated into German society
Abstract: Gisela Bok examines the Nazi's eugenics theories and sterilization programs, and Gitta Sereny questions Theresa Stangl, wife of the Kommandant of Sobibor and Treblinka, about her perceptions of the atrocities and of her moral responsibility. In Part Three, "Voices of Reflection," women artists and intellectuals contemplate the Holocaust. The poems of Irena Klepfisz decry the violent sexual persecutions of women, and a play by Ida Fink dramatizes the painful process of remembering. Mary Jo Leddy explores the ethics of power and powerlessness. Joan Ringelheim explains her pioneering recovery of women's stories of abuse, as well as her provocative statistics suggesting that more Jewish women than Jewish men actually perished in the Holocaust. Lyrical, vivid, and affecting, Different Voices is a powerful commemoration of the sufferings and of the courage of Jewish women during the darkest years of the twentieth century

Abstract: The tragedy of Hungarian Jewry reached its climax between the 15th of May and the 7th of July, 1944, when nearly half a million Jews were expelled from Hungary and sent to death camps. The removal of Jews from Hungary - except for those of the capital, Budapest - was absolute, and was carried out rapidly and efficiently. This dramatic event, unusual even against the background of the Holocaust, did not take place in a vacuum. It grew out of the relationship that had evolved over generations between the expelled people and the larger populace. The Christian church in Hungary played a central, active part in this relationship and its final, devastating outcome. The role of the Christian church in Hungary during the Nazis' campaign of Jewish mass extermination has been largely forgotten. Now, Moshe Herczl exposes this repressed and painful episode in the history of the Holocaust. Using previously unknown materials and extensive analytical research, he recreates the church's actions and disposition toward Hungarian Jewry. Drawing on personal correspondence, speeches, and of ficial platforms, he provides a scathing indictment - in its own words - of the church's lack of compassion toward - and even active persecution of - Hungary's Jews during this period.

Abstract: Against All Odds is a landmark book - the first comprehensive look at the 140,000 Jewish Holocaust survivors who came to America and the lives they have made here. It is the story of how they learned to live and trust again. William Helmreich spent more than six years traveling the United States, listening to the personal stories of hundreds of survivors and examining more than 15,000 pages of data as well as new material from archives that have never before been available, to create this remarkable, groundbreaking work. What emerges is a picture that is sharply different from the stereotypical image of survivors as people who are chronically depressed, anxious, and fearful. Instead, we see that survivors constitute a surprisingly normal community. They have rich and varied lives, they are vital contributors to their communities, and their family and work patterns are stable. But they have forged a distinct identity for themselves as a result of what they have endured - an identity that influences how they look at life and how they behave. Helmreich writes of their experiences from their first arrival in this country: the mixed reactions they encountered from American Jews who were not always eager to receive them; their choices about where to live in America - many settled in major cities in the United States, while others chose rural communities in Vineland, New Jersey, and Petaluma, California; and their efforts in finding marriage partners with whom they felt comfortable - most often, other survivors. But this intimate, enlightening work also explores larger questions about prevailing over hardship and adversity: how people who have gone through such experiences pick up the threads of their lives; where they obtain the strength and spirit to go on; and, finally, what lessons the rest of us can learn about overcoming tragedy.
