Abstract:
Elsa-Bertha Ginsburg (b. 1901), a German-Jewish artist, was married to the non-Jewish artist Heinrich Fischer, who was, like her, an expressionist. The couple and their six children survived the Nazi period thanks to the "Aryan" partner. Both were forbidden to practice their art, but continued in secret. Heinrich's art reflected the somberness of the times, whereas for Elsa-Bertha art during this period was more of an escape. Their postwar art does not reflect their Holocaust experience, but rather concentrates on formal aspects. The work of their daughter Sina Hofmann (b. 1935), however, is colored by her own experience as a "Mischling" child in the Third Reich, and by her concern for her parents and her consciousness of the fate of the Jewish people.
