Kurzfassung:
A socio-psychological examination of rescue activities, both group and individual, in the Netherlands with comparison to those in Belgium and France. The variety of motivations of rescuers and behavior of those who were rescued can be understood against the background of the society in which they lived and the nature of Nazi rule in each of the three countries. For example, the tradition of deference to authority which existed in the Netherlands and was lacking in Belgium and France impacted on the behavior of both Jews and non-Jews. Downgrading religiosity and social marginality as factors in the readiness to rescue, stresses the role of social cohesion in the rescuers' group, the role of authoritative leaders inclined to rescue, nationalism, and morality. Many people agreed to shelter a Jew after some psychological pressure was exerted on them. Not all rescuers and organizations operated with pure and altruistic motives.
Anmerkung:
Based on detailed work carried out on the Netherlands, with comparisons to Belgium and France.
