Kurzfassung:
Despite the official Soviet press's condemnation of the antisemitism of the Pamyat organization, questions about its origins in Soviet policy remain unanswered. The authorities allowed Valery Yemelyanov (recently released from a psychiatric hospital after murdering his wife) to address the demonstration of Pamyat supporters in May 1987, which was also received by the then Communist Party head in Moscow, Boris Yeltsin. Pamyat, founded in 1985 as a cultural nationalist group, was taken over by antisemites without altogether dropping its original concerns, blaming the Jews and Zionists for communist damage to Russia's cultural heritage. Cites evidence that the organization is protected by Communist Party officials from criminal investigation for incitement. Gorbachev describes both Zionism and antisemitism as evils to be fought, despite his "glasnost" policy.
