Kurzfassung:
Discusses reasons for the inclusion of homoerotic letters in a secret file, which was compiled by the French counter-espionage in 1894 and communicated to the court-martial in the Dreyfus case without the defense's knowledge. Reconstructs the exact contents of the file and notes that the homosexual correspondence, addressed to the German military attaché in Paris, Lieutenant Colonel Maximilien von Schwartzkoppen, by the Italian military attaché, Major Alessandro Panizzardi, served to effectuate a scandal and inspire the judges' revulsion toward the espionage network Dreyfus supposedly belonged to. Argues that the cultural and political context led to the amalgamation of homophobia and antisemitism. Although antisemitism was the main motive for the accusations, homophobia also played a role, especially at the beginning of the Affair. The secret file was a decisive factor in the sentencing of Dreyfus and his reduction to the ranks in 1899.
