Abstract:
Discusses the presentation of the Holocaust - its ordeals and its memory - in the poetry of two Jewish Holocaust survivors born in Bukovina: Paul Celan, focusing on his poem "Todesfuge", and Dan Pagis, focusing on his poem "Written in Pencil in the Sealed Railway-Car". Relates to the reflection of the Holocaust in their poetic language, symbolic language, metaphors, and in the aesthetic form of their works. Deals also with the representation of historical material in the two poems, the reception of the two poems, their cultural status, and the interpretation of Celan's poem by Adorno, Jean Améry and Primo Levi.
