Abstract:
Analyzes the distribution of blame for the Crucifixion between Jews and Romans in the four Gospels and in the works of modern scholars. The general consensus now is that the Jewish aristocracy and priesthood demanded, and Pilate carried out, Jesus's crucifixion for reasons of political expediency shared by both. Parallel to the historical strain in the New Testament runs a soteriological strain in which all mankind is guilty of the death of Jesus, and, as Luther emphasizes, the Jews are only the instruments. These traditions must be newly interpreted to avoid anti-Jewish implications and to include an understanding of human suffering and especially of Auschwitz, perhaps through the suffering God as the representative of the Jewish people.
