Abstract:
Criticizes Austria for denying responsibility for the Holocaust. Asserts that the "historians' debate" ignores the most important factor: traditional antisemitism based on economic and social interests. Demonstrates how eight steps led to the Final Solution in Austria: violent attacks on Jews immediately after the Anschluss; racial and discriminatory laws, enacted within a few days; dismissal of Jewish employees; forced emigration and confiscation of property; violent pogroms during the "Kristallnacht"; plans for a ghetto outside Vienna, changed to mass deportation to the East; stereotyping the Jews by changing their names, marking their clothes, etc.; forcing the Jewish community in Vienna to draw up the lists for deportation to extermination camps. Concludes that antisemitism is mainly economic in origin and is only partly motivated by ideology.
