Abstract:
Analyzes the antisemitic media campaign in 1979-80 as a reflection of the growth of a chauvinistic and xenophobic nationalism which threatened Brezhnev, his followers, and his policy of détente. In Brezhnev's speech to the 26th Communist Party Congress (1981), he made a rare statement against antisemitism which signified acknowledgement of the phenomenon in the USSR and public repudiation, but his accompanying condemnation of Zionism made the first statement ineffectual. Antisemitism in the media is evident in the hatemongering now published in the Soviet Union.
