    Abstract: In his literary texts, which remained mostly unpublished, Gustav Landauer (1870-1919) anticipated the linguistically skeptical ideas of his time. In new intertextual, intermedial and muted writing styles, he confronts the inadequacy of language in a creative manner. Through his entanglements with works of German literature and music, the Jewish author Landauer wrote himself into German culture. The presentation and analysis of all literary texts provides an important contribution to both research on Landauer and the study of cultural and social functions of intermediality and intertextuality.
    Abstract: In seinen größtenteils unveröffentlichten literarischen Texten nimmt Gustav Landauer (1870?1919) sprachskeptische Gedanken seiner Zeit voraus. In neuen intertextuellen, intermedialen und schweigenden Schreibweisen begegnet er der Unzulänglichkeit von Sprache kreativ. Durch Verschränkungen mit Werken deutscher Literatur und Musik schreibt der jüdische Autor Landauer sich zudem in die deutsche Kultur ein. Die Darstellung und Analyse aller literarischen Texte leistet einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Landauer-Forschung, aber auch zum Studium der kulturellen und sozialen Funktionen von Intermedialität und Intertextualität.

    Abstract: The attitude of Jews living in the medieval Christian world to Jews who converted to Christianity or to Christians seeking to join the Jewish faith reflects the central traits that make up Jewish self-identification. The Jews saw themselves as a unique group chosen by God, who expected them to play a specific and unique role in the world. This study researches fully for the first time the various aspects of the way European Jews regarded members of their own fold in the context of lapses into another religion. It attempts to understand whether they regarded the issue of conversion with self-confidence or with suspicion, and whether their attitude was based on a clear theological position, or on issues of socialisation. The book will primarily interest students and lecturers of Jewish/Christian relations, the Middle Ages, Jews in the Medieval period, and inter-religious research.

    Abstract: "The Body As Property indicates that physical disfigurement functioned in biblical law to verify legal property acquisition, when changes in the status of dependents were formalized. It is based on the reality the cuneiform script, in particular, was developed in Sumer and Mesopotamia for the purpose of record keeping: to provide legal proof of ownership where the inscription of a tablet evidenced the sale, or transfer, of property. Legitimate property acquisition was as important in biblical law, where physical disfigurements marked dependents, in a similar way that the veil or the head covering identified a wife or concubine in ancient Assyrian and Judean societies. This is primarily substantiated in the accounts of prescriptive disfigurements: namely circumcision and the piercing of a slave's ear, both of which were required only when a son, or slave, was acquired permanently. It is further argued that legal entitlement was relevant also to the punitive disfigurements recorded in Exodus 21:22-24, and Deuteronomy 25:11-12, where the physical violation of women was of concern solely as an infringement of male property rights."--Bloomsbury Publishing

Diesen für das Verständnis der deutsch-jüdischen Geschichte zentralen Fragen wird in dem Band ebenso nachgegangen wie den Auswirkungen, die Verfolgung, Vertreibung und Massenmord im 20. Jahrhundert auf die Geschlechterbilder und -rollen innerhalb der jüdischen Gemeinschaft hatten und inwiefern sich deren langfristige Spuren bis in die Gegenwart nachweisen lassen. Alina Gromova hat 15 junge Erwachsene ein Jahr lang durch ihren Alltag begleitet und ist ihnen an Orte wie jüdische Treffs und Partys, Cafés und Wohnungen, Synagogen und Clubs gefolgt. Die Analyse von Begegnungen zwischen jüdischen, russischen, deutschen, israelischen und muslimischen Traditionen offenbart einen ungezwungenen Umgang mit jüdischer Religion und Symbolik, jüdischer Essenstradition und Mode.Diese ethnologische Studie zeigt: Es ist ein Umgang »koscher light«, in dem sich Religion und Tradition nach den Gesetzen der Urbanität richten.
    Abstract: What role do spatial aspects play for the identity work and community education of young Russian-speaking Jews who now live in Germany? Alina Gromova has accompanied 15 young adults for a year through their daily lives and followed them to places like Jewish dates and parties, cafés and homes, synagogues and clubs. Her analysis of encounters between Jewish, Russian, German, Israeli, and Muslim traditions reveals a casual handling of Jewish religion, symbolism, food tradition, and fashion. This ethnographic study exhibits the dealings of Generation »Kosher Light«, in which religion and tradition conform to the laws of urbanity.

    Abstract: Does the design of the Tabernacle in the wilderness correspond to God’s blueprint of Creation? The Christian Topography, a sixth-century Byzantine Christian work, presents such a cosmology. Its theory is based on the “pattern” revealed to Moses on Mount Sinai when he was told to build the Tabernacle and its implements “after their pattern, which is being shown thee on the Mount.” (Exod. 25: 40). The book demonstrates, through texts and images, the motifs that link the Tabernacle and Creation. It traces the long chain of transmission that connects the Jewish and Christian traditions from Syria and ancient Israel to France and Spain from the first through the fourteenth century, revealing new models of interaction between Judaism and Christianity

    Abstract: The Society of Jesus (Jesuits) has become a leader in the dialogue between Jews and Catholics as was manifested in the role that the Jesuit Cardinal Augustin Bea played in the adoption by the Second Vatican Council of Nostra Aetate, the charter for that new relationship. Still the encounters between Jesuits and Jews were often characterized by animosity and this historical record made them a tragic couple, related but estranged. This volume is the first examination of the complex interactions between Jesuits and Jews from the early modern period in Europe and Asia through the twentieth century where special attention is focused on the historical context of the Holocaust

    Abstract: In Reading the Rabbis Eva De Visscher examines the Hebrew scholarship of Englishman Herbert of Bosham (c.1120-c.1194). Chiefly known as the loyal secretary and hagiographer of Archbishop Thomas Becket and enemy of Henry II, he appears here as an outstanding Hebraist whose linguistic proficiency and engagement with Rabbinic sources, including contemporary teachers, were unique for a northern-European Christian of his time. Two commentaries on the Psalms by Herbert form the focus of scrutiny. In demonstrating influence from Jewish and Christian texts such as Rashi, Hebrew-French glossaries, Hebrew-Latin Psalters, and Victorine scholarship, De Visscher situates Herbert within the context of an increased interest in the revision of Jerome's Latin Bible and literal exegesis, and a heightened Christian awareness of Jewish 'other-ness'

    Abstract: The Cuzari is a medieval work of great importance that discusses the foundations of the Jewish faith. It was written in Spain at the time when the country was divided between Christians and Muslims in the XII century, in the beginning of the crusades, and when the Neo-Platonic philosophy influences the Islamic and Jewish thought. This work aimed to raise the self-esteem of a persecuted people and promote the differentiation between the Hellenistic and Jewish thought. A work written nearly nine hundred years ago, it remains as contemporary as when it was written, and it remains one of the basic books of Jewish philosophy. The discussions about freedom and free-will are some of the highlights of the work. The Cuzari discusses faith, reason, human intellect, ethics and moral and how to reconcile human free-will to the divine power, judgment and omniscience.
    Abstract: O Cuzari é uma obra medieval de grande importância que discute os fundamentos da fé judaica. Escrita na Espanha dividida entre cristãos e muçulmanos do século XII, quando eclodem as cruzadas, e quando a filosofia neoplatônica influencia o pensamento islâmico e judaico, esta obra objetivou levantar a auto-estima de um povo perseguido e promover a diferenciação entre o pensamento judaico e o helenístico. Uma obra escrita há aproximadamente novecentos anos, que permanece tão atual quanto no momento em que foi escrita, e continua sendo um dos livros básicos de filosofia judaica. A questão da liberdade e do livre-arbítrio é um dos pontos altos da obra. O Cuzari discute fé, razão, intelecto humano, ética e moral, e como é possível compatibilizar o livrearbítrio humano com o poder, o julgamento e a onisciência divinos.

    Abstract: This book addresses different theories related to the origin of Gnosticism. The author comes to the conclusion that, if we set aside the Christian substance, in Gnostic literature – besides Platonist philosophy – the most numerous influences come from Judaism. As they have, partially, reached Gnostic literature independent from Christianity, it could validate the theory according to which we should be searching for the origin of Gnosticism in certain Judaist circles. The author analyses the use of lore from the Old Testament and Judaism in Gnostic literature. Even though this does not prove that Gnosticism has evolved from Judaism, it still shows how extensively the Judaist world of thought influenced Gnosticism and how it gives us a reason to ask whether we should consider more thoroughly the theory according to which we should be searching for the founders of Gnostic lore within certain Judaist circles of antiquity. Über den Ursprung der antiken Gnosis gibt es verschiedene Theorien, aber noch heute herrscht in dieser Frage in der Forschung kein Konsens. Der Autor dieses Buches betrachtet unterschiedliche Ursprungstheorien der Gnosis und kommt zu dem Ergebnis, dass (abgesehen vom christlichen Stoff) neben den Einflüssen des Mittelplatonismus der alttestamentliche und jüdische Stoff in der gnostischen Literatur die wichtigste Rolle spielt. Da der jüdische Stoff teilweise durch die Vermittlung des Christentums in die Gnosis gekommen ist, könnte das die alte Hypothese unterstützen, dass die Gnosis innerhalb des Christentums entstanden sei. Doch gibt es eine Vielzahl gnostischer Texte, die vom Christentum nicht beeinflusst sind, in denen aber der alttestamentliche und jüdische Stoff eine sehr wichtige Rolle spielt. Diese Tatsache könnte nun die zweite alte Theorie unterstützen, nach der die Wurzeln der Gnosis im antiken Judentum liegen. Der Autor der vorliegenden Arbeit analysiert den Gebrauch der alttestamentlichen und jüdischen Überlieferungen und Motive in der gnostischen Literatur und kommt zu dem Ergebnis, dass es nicht letztgültig bewiesen ist, dass die Gnosis aus dem Judentum heraus entstand. Doch zeigt die Untersuchung, wie große Bedeutung die alttestamentlichen und jüdischen Motive in der Gnosis gehabt haben. Dies gibt Anlass zu fragen, ob wir dennoch die Theorie ernsthaft zu erwägen haben, nach der der Ursprung der Gnosis in Kreisen des antiken Judentums zu suchen sei

    Abstract: "The 'New Perspective on Paul' cleared Judaism contemporary to Paul of the accusation that it was a religion based on works of righteousness.     Abstract: This work studies and compares systematically the text of Tertullian, an African Church Father of the third century CE, on idolatry with the rabbinic Mishnah Avodah Zarah , on the same subject, dating roughly from the same period. Similarities and differences between the Jewish and Christian approaches to idolatry are examined and accounted for. The research is inscribed in the wider framework of discussions on the “parting of the ways” between Jews and Christians.     Abstract: The present volume of studies on the life and work of Moritz (Moshe) Steinschneider (1816-1907) seeks to modify the traditional view of Steinschneider as a “mere bibliographer” by revealing other dimensions of his scientific personality. Together, the articles show that Steinschneider’s manifold scholarly activities were rooted in a well-defined scientific agenda, which modern readers do not easily recognize but which deserves to be recovered. This volume represents a first attempt to sketch Steinschneider’s intellectual biography and highlights the continued significance of his work for Jewish studies. It is an important contribution to our understanding of the project of nineteenth-century Wissenschaft des Judentums and its lasting impact on contemporary scholarly practice

    Abstract: In Between Feminism and Orthodox Judaism , Yael Israel-Cohen offers an analysis of the activism and identity of women considered at the forefront of the feminist challenge to Orthodoxy. Through a look at women’s battle over synagogue ritual and the ordination of women rabbis, an intricate and complex picture of identity, resistance, and religious change is revealed. Some of the central questions that Yael Israel-Cohen explores are: How do modern Orthodox women strategize to implement feminist changes? How do they deal with what at least on the surface seem to be conflicting allegiances? How do they perceive their role as agents of change and what are the ramifications of their activism for how we understand the boundaries of Orthodoxy more generally? It is well-written, theoretically sophisticated, and grounded within the literature.     Abstract: Jewish history has been extensively studied from social, political, religious, and intellectual perspectives, but the history of Jewish consumption and leisure has largely been ignored. The hitherto neglect of scholarship on Jewish consumer culture arises from the tendency within Jewish studies to chronicle the production of high culture and entrepreneurship. Yet consumerism played a central role in Jewish life. This volume is the first of its kind to deal with the topic of Jewish consumer culture. It gives new insights on Jewish belongings and longings and provides multiple readings of Jewish consumer culture as a vehicle of integration and identity in modern times. \'Overall Reuveni and Roemer offer a rich volume that will provoke thought and discussion in a variety of venues.     Abstract: Dialogue participants demonstrate strong motivations for contributing to interreligious dialogue, based on a firm belief that encountering the other generates understanding – the contact thesis. Interreligious dialogue meets with both suspicion and cynicism: the former because it may result in loss of identity, and the latter because important issues may be ignored. The hitherto unanswered question is how Jewish-Christian-Muslim dialogue affects the identities of its participants. In this study Rachel Reedijk analyses identity construction in an interreligious context against the backdrop of the dominant either/or discourse regarding religious diversity – and, for that matter, multiculturalism – in Western society. The conceptual framework of this study is constituted by the debate on essentialism and constructivism in the social sciences. She argues that, under the right circumstances, interreligious dialogue can move beyond polemics and apologetics and prepare the ground for understanding in the dual sense of prejudice reduction and interreligious hermeneutics

    Abstract: For a long time Moses Mendelssohn's (1729-1786) »Jerusalem« was one of the neglected works of the German Enlightenment period. Only in recent years has it started to be given the critical attention it merits, albeit almost exclusively from the perspective of the history of emancipation and of minorities. The present study examines the work in terms of the history of ideas and places it in the context of contemporaneous European thought, demonstrating that in it Mendelssohn presents a highly innovative angle on the issue of human rights and the possibility of pluralistic societies.
    Abstract: Moses Mendelssohns (1729-1786) »Jerusalem« gehörte lange zu den vergessenen Texten der deutschen Aufklärung. Erst in letzter Zeit ist er wieder in das Blickfeld der Forschung gerückt - freilich fast ausschließlich unter emanzipations- und minderheitengeschichtlichen Fragestellungen. Dass Mendelssohn auch ein hochinnovatives Votum zur Menschenrechtsfrage und zur Möglichkeit pluralistischer Gesellschaften vorlegt, wird in dieser Studie ideengeschichtlich rekonstruiert und im europäischen Denkhorizont verortet.
