    Abstract: In The Existential Philosophy of Etty Hillesum Meins G.S. Coetsier breaks new ground by demonstrating the Jewish existential nature of Etty Hillesum’s spiritual and cultural life in light of the writings of Martin Buber, Emmanuel Levinas and Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Hillesum’s diaries and letters, written between 1941 and 1943, illustrate her struggle to come to terms with her personal life in the context of the Second World War and the Shoah. By finding God under the rubble of the horrors, she rediscovers the divine presence between humankind, while taking up responsibility for the Other as a way to embrace justice and compassion. In a fascinating, accessible and thorough study, Coetsier dispels much of the confusion that assails readers when they are exposed to the bewildering range of Christian and Jewish influences and other cultural interpretations of her writings. The result is a convincing and profound picture of Etty Hillesum's path to spiritual freedom

    Abstract: "Once regarded as a vibrant centre of intellectual, cultural and spiritual Jewish life, Lithuania was home to 240,000 Jews prior to the Nazi invasion of 1941. By war's end, less than 20,000 remained. Today, approximately 4,000 Jews reside there, among them 108 survivors from the camps and ghettos and a further 70 from the Partisans and Red Army.     Abstract: This volume offers insights into the major Jewish migration movements and rebuilding of European Jewish communities in the mid-twentieth century. Its chapters illustrate many facets of the Jews’ often traumatic post-war experiences. People had to find their way when returning to their countries of origin or starting from scratch in a new land. Their experiences and hardships from country to country and from one community of migrants to another are analyzed here. The mass exodus of Jews from Arab and Muslim countries is also addressed to provide a necessary and broader insight into how those challenges were met, as both migrations were a result of persecution, as well as discrimination.     Abstract: The attitude of Jews living in the medieval Christian world to Jews who converted to Christianity or to Christians seeking to join the Jewish faith reflects the central traits that make up Jewish self-identification. The Jews saw themselves as a unique group chosen by God, who expected them to play a specific and unique role in the world. This study researches fully for the first time the various aspects of the way European Jews regarded members of their own fold in the context of lapses into another religion. It attempts to understand whether they regarded the issue of conversion with self-confidence or with suspicion, and whether their attitude was based on a clear theological position, or on issues of socialisation. The book will primarily interest students and lecturers of Jewish/Christian relations, the Middle Ages, Jews in the Medieval period, and inter-religious research.

    Abstract: Anfang Juli 1941 begann Rumänien an der Seite Deutschlands seinen Vernichtungskrieg im Osten. In den ersten Kriegstagen kam es in der Nordbukowina und in Bessarabien zu Massenmorden an der jüdischen Bevölkerung. Täter waren meist rumänische Soldaten und Gendarmen. Vielerorts beteiligten sich die Nachbarn der Juden an den Massakern oder initiierten selbst Pogrome. Simon Geissbühler schildert die Vorgeschichte der antisemitischen Radikalisierung im Rumänien der Zwischenkriegszeit und rekonstruiert die bislang kaum untersuchten blutigen Ereignisse des Sommers 1941. Er analysiert die Motive und Handlungsspielräume der Täter und fügt die wenigen Zeugnisse zusammen, die vom Leiden der Opfer berichten. Die Suche nach der Erinnerung an den Holocaust in Ru-mä-nien ist Thema des letzten Teils des Buches. Beeindruckende Fotografien verfallender Mahnmale, Massengräber und Friedhöfe zeigen: Viel ist nicht geblieben; die jüdische Vergangenheit wurde weitgehend aus der öffentlichen Wahrnehmung verbannt.     Abstract: Congratulations to Adriana Brodsky and Raanan Rein whose edited volume has been chosen as the winner of the 2013 Latin American Jewish Studies Association Book Prize! The New Jewish Argentina aims at filling in important lacunae in the existing historiography of Jewish Argentines. Moving away from the political history of the organized community, most articles are devoted to social and cultural history, including unaffiliated Jews, women and gender, criminals, printing presses and book stores. These essays, written by scholars from various countries, consider the tensions between the national and the trans-national and offer a mosaic of identities which is relevant to all interested in Jewish history, Argentine history and students of ethnicity and diaspora.     Abstract: SS ideology was the expression of an apparently philosophical self-containing system of thought, articulated around a systematic body of knowledge claiming to integrate humanity inside a global vision of Being. Using ontology and anthropology as foundations, SS thinking developed essentially in the field of ethics. It portrayed itself as a global approach to society and civilization, based on eugenics and ethnic cleansing. It accomplished the fusion of the modern biological paradigm with the cultural shock brought about by World War I and promoted total war for the sake of total health. And since institutional philosophy largely ignores SS theory and praxis, Holocaust memorial institutions may represent an alternative for the development of understanding and reflection. Within the context of Nazism, SS thinking did much to work out the theory for which the Holocaust would be the ultimate accomplishment. It intended to provide the Holocaust with legitimacy, from the viewpoints of ontology, anthropology, politics, and ethics, whence the importance of studying the theoretical framework that gave sense to the most terrible form of SS praxis

    Abstract: Will the Russian and Jewish nations ever achieve true reconciliation? Why is there such disparity in the interpretations of Russo-Jewish history? These questions are part of a greater whole-Russia's perpetual Jewish Question. This historically thorny subject has been the focus of Nobel Laureate Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn for the last ten years, culminating in a publication that will be among his final literary offerings.     Abstract: Recent nation-wide surveys of the Jews of France yielded a detailed picture of this community, one of the largest Jewish Diaspora populations, with a long and rich history. This book presents results and analyses of this survey for the first time in English. Data was analyzed using multi-dimensional techniques, revealing underlying structural relationships and an axiological typology.     Abstract: This volume offers a re-examination of some of the prevalent paradigms in Latin American Jewish Studies and an instigation to further explorations in this area. It sets out from an interdisciplinary standpoint, comprising literature, culture, history, cinematography, music and visual arts. This collection of articles seeks a wider range of theoretical and disciplinary perspectives concerning Latin American Jewish experiences, and thereby offers a framework for innovative as well as traditional modes of analysis.     Abstract: "For minority faith groups living in nineteenth-century Iran, religious conversion to Islam - both voluntary and forced - was the primary means of social integration and assimilation. However, why was it that some Persian Jews instead embraced the emergent Baha'i Faith, which was subject to harsher persecution that Judaism? Mehrdad Amanat explores the conversion experiences of Jewish families during this time, and examines the fluid, multiple religious identities that many converts adopted.     Abstract: Since their recent dispersion from the former Soviet Union, Russian-speaking Jews (RSJ) have become the vast majority of Germany’s longstanding Jewry. An entity marked by permeable boundaries, they show a solidarity and commitment to world Jewry, including Israel, but feeble identification with their hosts. The identification with the larger Jewish community leads to a wide consensus concerning the importance of offering Jewish education to the young. The study presented here explores the influence of the RSJ community, their relationship with German speaking Jews, and the ways in which the RSJ identification with world Jewry influences Jewish education opportunities for the young. Utilizing surveys of the largest Jewish communities in Germany, interviews of leading public figures, and a comprehensive overview of the Jewish educational framework available in Germany, this book seeks to present a description and analysis of the Jewish population in Germany including its attitudes, activities, expectations, and identify formulations.     Abstract: The essays gathered here challenge essentialist concepts and overemphasis on Jewish particularity, as well as the common discourse of Jewish victimology. At the same time, they reveal how the Jews, like other ethnic groups, are not monolithic but fragmented by place of origin, social class, political ideologies, and gender. The topics discussed include the non-political Zionism espoused by Sephardic Jews during the first half of the 20th century, Argentine neutrality during World War II, the entry of Nazi war criminals to Argentina, the regime of Juan Perón and its attitudes towards Jewish-Argentines and the state of Israel, the reactions of Jews to the anti-Semitic wave in Argentina following the kidnapping of Adolf Eichman by Mossad agents, the Latin American community in Israel, and protests by Argentine exiles in Israel against the 1978 world-cup soccer games, played in Argentina during a brutal military regime.     Abstract: Ahlrich Meyer behandelt erstmals die Judenverfolgung in allen drei während des Zweiten Weltkriegs besetzten westeuropäischen Ländern und geht der Frage nach, was die deutschen Täter wie die Opfer über den tatsächlichen Zweck der Deportationen in die Vernichtungslager wussten. Was wusste die Masse der Täter von Auschwitz, und was haben die verfolgten und deportierten Juden geahnt oder gewusst? Diese Fragen standen nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg im Mittelpunkt vieler Gerichtsprozesse. Sie hängen aufs engste mit dem Problem von Verantwortung und Schuld zusammen und lassen Rückschlüsse auf die Organisation und Durchführung des Massenverbrechens zu. Beide Fragen sind jedoch nicht so leicht zu beantworten, wie es scheinen mag. Nicht alle deutschen Akteure waren über die Dimension des Vernichtungsprogramms unterrichtet. Dies gilt zumal für diejenigen, die an der »Endlösung« in Westeuropa mitwirkten. Ebenso wenig haltbar ist die Behauptung, die Juden seien sehenden Auges in den Tod gegangen. Im ersten Teil des Buches werden Vernehmungsaussagen von Angehörigen der deutschen Besatzungsmacht in Frankreich, Belgien und den Niederlanden aus der Nachkriegszeit herangezogen. Während die meisten von ihnen behaupteten, während des Krieges von Auschwitz nichts gewusst zu haben, gibt es ausreichend Zeugen oder Beschuldigte, die eine Kenntnis des Judenmords einräumten. Zur Konfrontation mit den Verhören der Täter stellt der Autor im zweiten Teil neu aufgefundene Zeugenberichte von Holocaust-Überlebenden vor. Die vergleichende Analyse zeigt, was die Tatbeteiligten wissen konnten, was sie den Opfern über den Zweck der Deportationen gesagt haben und welche Gerüchte, Ahnungen und Nachrichten unter den Juden selbst verbreitet waren

    Abstract: Die Studie analysiert die Funktion des Hörspiels als kulturelles Gedächtnismedium anhand der Erinnerungen an den Holocaust im Rundfunk der DDR. Im Vergleich zur bereits vielfach untersuchten Darstellung des Holocaust in anderen Medien werden erstmals die spezifischen ästhetischen Mittel des Hörspiels und die Rolle des Rundfunks als politisches Machtinstrument in der deutsch-deutschen Auseinandersetzung fokussiert. Auszüge aus den analysierten Hörspielen finden sich auf der beigegebenen Audio-CD.
    Abstract: This study investigates the function of the radio play asmedium of cultural memory, based on the memories of the holocaust found in the radio plays of the GDR. In comparison to the presentation of the holocaust in other media, which has already been explored various times, here for the first time the focus is on the specific aesthetic means of the radio play and the role of radio as political instrument of power in the FRG-GDR conflict. Extracts from the analyzed radio plays are included in the enclosed audio CD.

    Abstract: Main description: Die Singularität der Ermordung der europäischen Juden durch das Deutsche Reich wirft die Frage auf, inwieweit und ab welchem Punkt sich die deutsche Entwicklung von der anderer Staaten in Europa abkoppelte. Michael Mayer vergleicht deshalb erstmals systematisch die "Judenpolitik" des Deutschen Reichs mit der des zweitwichtigsten modernen Industriestaates auf dem Kontinent: Frankreich. Die Vichy-Regierung schwankte in ihrer Politik zwischen der Verwirklichung einer autochthonen Politik und der Anpassung an deutsche Forderungen. Mit Hilfe eines Vergleichs kann der Autor wichtige neue Antworten zur Struktur des NS-Staates und Vichy-Frankreichs sowie zu deren Politik gegenüber den Juden finden.

    Abstract: In the course of the Second World War, the National Socialist persecution of the Jews in the German Reich and throughout the occupation period, art was stolen to a great extent. In this book, the author systematically describes – in historical as well as juridical terms – the extremely complex subject matter of art theft in the Second World War (so-called 0looted art0), in marked contrast to persecution-related dispossession of cultural assents from mostly Jewish provenience. In these frequently sensitive matters concerning the restitution of war-related, expropriated and/or persecution-related, removed cultural assets, questions arising from the realm of (international) private law, the intertemporal law of restitution and indemnification as well as international law are to be answered first and foremost.
