Abstract:
Examines the symbolic use of the book image in the illuminated "Bible moralisée" of the 13th century (the French version, Vienna O.N.B. codex 2554). Its illustrations show the closed scroll held in the hands of Jews and Old Testament prophets, a symbol of the refuted, legalistic Old Law, while the open book represents the New Law. Concludes that this work, which was an outstanding source of medieval anti-Jewish propaganda, was not intended for the laity but as a visual teaching manual for the clergy.
