Abstract:
Discusses a play by the Hungarian playwright József Katona (1792-1830), "The Destruction of Jerusalem" (1814), based on Josephus Flavius' "Bellum Judaicum". Relating to the Roman siege of Jerusalem, the play focuses on the affair of Berenice and Titus, when she sneaks out of Jerusalem with the intention to murder Titus but instead falls in love with him. It also portrays the terrible suffering of the Jews within the walls of the city.
