Kurzfassung:
The research examined perceptions and attitudes of parents of intellectually challenged children, and employers and employees without such disabilities towards vocational inclusion of people challenged with intellectual developmental disabilities (hereinafter: intellectually challenged) in the Arab society in Israel and correlations between these attitudes and certain socio-demographic variables. The study maps background factors, locations and employment of intellectually challenged persons. The participants were 1,070 Arab respondents from three categories: parents of intellectually challenged children (N=270), employers (N=400, all from the private sector) and employees without such disabilities (N=400). The research tool was a quantitative questionnaire, especially developed for the research and appropriately adapted for each of the research groups. The main research findings suggest that most of the intellectually challenged persons whose parents participated in the research cope with additional disabilities apart from their intellectual disability; parents of these children prefer a therapeutic day center as a vocational solution and have less positive attitudes towards intellectually challenged persons in comparison to the other groups. Therefore, parents of intellectually challenged children seem to be the weak link that could block their children’s vocational inclusion. No difference was found between attitudes of employers and persons without disabilities concerning the employment of the intellectually challenged, although some employees without disabilities express more concerns and anxiety concerning work with the intellectually challenged and are less supportive of their empowerment. Both employers and employees without disabilities with less education have less positive attitudes towards the vocational inclusion of intellectually challenged persons, and those from the older age report more obstacles to vocational inclusion of the intellectually challenged.
