Abstract:
Discusses the history of the decree, made in 1870, which granted French citizenship to the Jews in Algeria, but not to the Muslims, and examines the repercussions at the time of its proclamation, and its periodic questioning by opponents until the end of the anti-Jewish crisis in 1901. The study is based on examination of reports which appeared in the Marseille economic newspaper "Le Sémaphore" in 1870-71 and later on in the harshest moments of the antisemitic crisis,1897-98. This newspaper published reports of events in Algeria on a regular basis.
