Abstract:
Presents previously unpublished information gathered from archival documents, and especially a manuscript by the sexton Salomon Mendes Coutinho, written in 1944-45 in Amsterdam (facsimiles on pp. 62-70). It is estimated that 80% of all Dutch Jews were deported to their deaths. Of 4,257 Sephardim only about 500 survived. Leaders of the Portuguese Jewish Community of Amsterdam were able, at times, to delay deportation of its members. They were successful in preventing the destruction of their synagogue and community center, aided by the mayor of Amsterdam, E.J. Voute, who did not object to the deportations but was interested in preserving the Portuguese synagogue as an historical landmark. As late as winter-spring 1944-45 a few Sephardic Jews who were left behind in Amsterdam were able to practice their religion and traditions. States that no other Jewish community in occupied Europe functioned as long as did the Portuguese Jewish Community of Amsterdam.
