Abstract:
An article originally written for the "Black Book", but not included for unknown reasons. Odessa was occupied by Romanian troops on 15 October 1941. Between 40%-50% of the Jewish population (ca. 100,000) evacuated the city beforehand. Ca. 120,000 remained. Gives details of the persecutions which ensued - arrests, public hangings, mass shootings, and deportation to Bogdanovka in Transnistria, which became a concentration camp for Jews of the region, including from Bessarabia, Bukovina, etc. The mass murders were carried out by shootings in the woods nearby and burning the bodies in the ravine. Mentions, also, Jews who managed to hide in Odessa (a few hundred) and Jews who joined the partisans.
