Abstract:
Discusses the issue of the Portuguese Converso immigration to Brazil, beginning in 1544, and especially to the town of Bahia. States that most of the accusations of Judaizing were motivated by a desire to appropriate the properties of the Conversos, and that most of the denunciations came from representatives of the Church or of the administration (e.g. Manuel Temudo, curate of Bahia). The first Inquisitor came to Brazil in 1591; the Jesuits were the most active agents of the Inquisition in the colony. Describes the condition of the Conversos, recalling the wave of trials of 1646.
