Abstract:
Examines the central thesis of B. Netanyahu about the origin of the Inquisition in Spain, which states that the religious question was not the decisive reason for the establishment of the Inquisition. Social, economic, and political factors, as well as the exacerbated racism during the 14th-15th centuries expressed by Christians against the growing population of Conversos, resulted in the establishment of the Inquisition by the Catholic Kings who, according to Netanyahu, aimed to appease the animosity of Old Christians against the Conversos and thereby pacify the turbulent social atmosphere of the time. Criticizes Netanyahu for rejecting the relevance of official documents of the Church and the Crown, in which it is clearly stated that the aim of the Inquisition was the persecution of heresy. It applied not only against Jews, but also against Muslims, witches, Protestants, and sexual deviants. This fact proves that the Inquisition was created to resolve the religious question, even though later it was involved in temporal struggles.
