Abstract: States that Netanyahu, in opposition to traditional historiography on the Inquisition which asserts that most of the Conversos in Spain were Judaizers, proves that Crypto-Judaism in Spain at the time of the establishment of the Inquisition was a minor phenomenon and consequently the Inquisition could not have a religious justification. Agrees with Netanyahu that a major factor present at that time was antisemitism, covered up by religious pretexts which aimed to prevent the integration of Conversos in Christian society, accusing them of collective heresy. This anti-Converso movement found expression in documents like "Pesquisa", "Petición dirigida al Rey" and "Sentencia-estatuto contra los conversos", which appeared in Toledo in 1449. These documents are considered by Netanyahu as proof of extant antisemitism. According to him, the establishment of the Inquisition by the Spanish monarchs was a response to the anti-Converso movement - an attempt by Fernando and Isabel to satisfy their demands, limiting the persecution of Conversos only to Judaizers.
