Abstract:
States that the lack of documentation on the Jews of Zamora, Spain, reflects the unimportance of the community (first mentioned in 1258) in the social and economic life of the city, the measure of integration of the Jews, and the absence of antisemitism among the Christian population. There are, nevertheless, references to Vicente Ferrer's visit to Zamora in 1412, followed by conversions, and hostility toward Jews strengthened by the presence of Conversos suspected of Judaizing and envied for their social mobility. also recalls the dissident prince Alfonso's anti-Jewish policy after 1464, growing insecurity, abuses by officials, and sermons and conversions imposed on the Jews prior to the 1492 expulsion. Analyzes the problem of the Conversos in Zamora, mainly after the expulsion, mentioning a number of trials for Judaizing between 1493-95.
