Abstract:
Describes various historical theories concerning the relationship toward New Christians in Iberia and in Latin America. Regarding the Inquisition, some historians explain it as a natural consequence of the existence of dissenting religious groups who were hostile to each other. Others say that New Christians were viewed with suspicion by those in power, as Catholic renegades. Other historians state that the religious persecution and forced conversion of the Jews was abnormal, illegitimate and morally despicable. Antonio José Saraiva suggests that the New Christians were a myth invented by the Inquisition to stop the advance of the bourgeoisie.
