Abstract:
Recalls the forced conversion of the Jews in Portugal (1497), and marks of stigma and of suspicion directed against Conversos. Discusses the case of Bento Teixeira, who was born in Porto, Portugal to Converso parents. The family emigrated to Brazil ca. 1567. Teixeira is considered to have been the first important poet in Brazil. He was denounced by his wife and arrested by the Inquisition in 1595. He was sent to Lisbon, and forced to "confess" and abjure his Judaism. While in prison, he wrote his epic poem "Prosopopeia". Vieira analyzes this poem as an expression of the strategy of dissimulation (of Judaizing) and simulation (of Christianity) imposed on the Conversos who were forced to lead a tragic, threatened, double life.

A Portuguese version appeared in "Ibéria Judaica" (1996).
