Abstract:
Discusses the fragments of Yitzhak Zuckerman's book "A Surplus of Memory: Chronicle of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising" which deal with the Armia Krajowa and its relationship to ŻOB. Disagrees with Zuckerman's opinion that the AK could have helped the Jews during the organization of the uprisings in the Warsaw and Białystok ghettos but did not want to. Argues that ŻOB's contacts with communists and other leftist organizations was an important obstacle for the AK leaders, who were thinking about postwar times and were opposed to Soviet influences in Poland. Asserts that internal struggles among the Jews in the Warsaw ghetto, between Bundists, Revisionists, and ŻOB, obstructed joint collaboration and provoked additional problems and lack of trust on the Polish side. Concludes that an important element in the tragedy of the Jews in the ghettos was the conflict between various interests and visions of postwar times which influenced decisions on possible joint actions against the Nazis.
