Abstract:
Summarizes the main arguments of Goldhagen in his "Hitler's Willing Executioners" (1996), and criticizes them. Asserts that Goldhagen does not understand totalitarian reality and its influence on people's behavior. Also, the thesis of the exceptional character of German antisemitism cannot be defended. Discusses the phenomenon of the popularity of Goldhagen's book in Germany and reactions to it. Most German historians criticize the book, but young German readers are prepared to accept its arguments.
