Abstract:
During the 1905-07 revolution, Polish and Jewish revolutionary organizations resorting to terrorist methods operated in Siedlce. After the murder of a police officer by Polish Socialist Party militants, the Russian military authorities decided to terrorize the Jewish population, which they held responsible for the attack. Between 8-10 August 1906, a pogrom was carried out by Russian troops at the order of the city's commandant, Col. Tikhanovskii. The soldiers fired at houses, beat up inhabitants, searched homes and shops, and looted goods. Afterwards, the Russian authority demanded an inquiry. Several reports were produced, which are now held at the Main Archive of Old Records in Warsaw. 26 civilians died in the pogrom, whereas not one soldier was killed by a revolutionary. In his report to Prime Minister Stolypin, the Governor General of the Kingdom of Poland chose a version of the events that justified the pogrom.
