Abstract:
A slightly modified version of a paper delivered at the conference "History and Culture of the Polish Jew", Jerusalem 1988. The Jewish population in Poland was formally identified by affiliation to the Jewish religious community. Describes the variety of groups inside this community, focusing especially on assimilated, polonized Jews. Discusses antisemitism, its impact on assimilated Jews, and their reactions to this phenomenon. In some cases, polonized Jews, whose forebears had already assimilated and forgotten Judaism, because of rejection by Polish society began to manifest interest in their ancient culture. Describes the example of the writer and journalist Aleksander Hertz.
