Abstract:
Highlights changes in the Israeli ultra-Orthodox community's postwar reaction to the Holocaust and in its memory of the Holocaust since the 1980s as reflected in the collection edited by Joel Schwartz and Yitzhak Goldstein (published in Hebrew, 1987, and in English, 1990), "Ha-Shoah: Leket dvarim be-nosse' hurban yahadut Europa 5700-5705 mi-tokh aspaklaryah shel Torah" ["Shoah: A Jewish Perspective on Tragedy in the Context of the Holocaust"] and in Schwartz's "Zakhor: Zekhirat ma'ase Amalek she-be-dorenu - Germania ha-Natzit" (Jerusalem, 1993). Instead of putting the blame for the Holocaust on the Zionists and on the alleged effect of their ideology on the inadequate rescue attempts during the Holocaust, these two books probe the theological implications of the Holocaust, including the conduct of the victims, the perpetrators, and the bystanders, using sources and views presented in academic research and in public discourse on the Holocaust.
