Abstract:
Based on new archival material and testimonies, discusses Jewish education in Nazi-occupied Warsaw. Notes that Jewish schools did open in October 1939, but were forced to close in December; some were allowed to open again in September 1941, with 5,000 students in attendance, but these were finally closed in July 1942. Meanwhile, a network of underground classes, each consisting of 10-12 children, had been set up beginning in December 1939. Many house committees, under the auspices of the Centos organization, set up clubs for children, which included classroom lessons. In addition, Centos provided classes in 28 children's kitchens, where they fed almost 30,000 children, 15 orphanages and dormitories, and six day care centers. Discusses, also, the motivation of the children or lack thereof, teaching plans and methods, and the effect of the deportations of summer 1942. While there had been ca. 100,000 children living in the ghetto in late 1941, only ca. 5,000 remained in fall 1942. Educational activities continued briefly, but ceased with the deportation of January 1943.
