Abstract:
Carolingian representations of Ecclesia and Synagoga show them as two noble women of equal rank, in accordance with the doctrine of the role of both in salvation history. Although this image persisted throughout the Middle Ages, later images of Synagoga are more often hostile. Shift of emphasis to the crucified Christ, especially as represented in the passion plays; the literary genre of the altercatio, the dispute of Church and Synagogue over the inheritance of the kingdom; and, finally, the politicization and popularization of the theme during the Crusades - all these led to an image of the Synagogue as turning away from Christ or rejected by him; as sinful, blinded, abject, and defeated; and even as murdering Christ or as dying at his hand.
