Abstract:
Based on a lecture held at the Theological Faculty of the University of Leipzig, November 1998. The expert opinion refuting the blood libel was issued by the Theological Faculty of the University of Leipzig in 1714 at the request of King Augustus II "der Starke", King of Poland and Elector of Saxony. In the context of growing religious fanaticism in Poland, there were fifteen ritual murder trials during his reign, including several in Sandomierz which ended in the execution of the accused and the expulsion of all of the Jews of the town. The king asked whether there was any foundation for the blood libel, in an effort to protect the Jews; but his authority appears to have been limited. The "Gutachten" was published in 1751 in a collection of Gutachten of the Theological Faculty, and was often cited in connection with later ritual murder trials.
