Kurzfassung:
Analyzes the psychological attitudes of individuals and groups (including the German Army) involved in carrying out the Final Solution and the influence of antisemitism on these attitudes. Antisemitism was instilled in the general population by continuous and systematic propaganda. Points to Hitler’s passive role in the Final Solution. Contends that details of the operations were not mentioned in his presence, although he spoke of the liquidation of the Jews in his table-talk. The execution of Hitler’s utopian plans was a complicated process, with actions initiated by several agencies until Himmler and Heydrich took over in 1941. Surveys the agencies involved and the disagreements among them. Contends that the Holocaust was not pre-planned but was improvised by Eichmann’s bureaucratic machine.
Anmerkung:
Appeared also in "Kontroversen um Hitler" (1986) 248-298, and in his "Der Nationalsozialismus und die deutsche Gesellschaft" (1991). Appeared in English as "The realization of the unthinkable; the 'Final Solution of the Jewish question' in the Third Reich" in "The Policies of Genocide" (1986) 97-144.
