Abstract:
Asserts that at the time of his speech, Hitler had long been doing everything possible to bring about a European war. Therefore his "prophecy" that in the event of such a war the Jews would be exterminated was not a warning but a declaration of intentions. He was used to expressing his intentions in conditional form, then bringing about the condition so that his action would seem, in the eyes of world and internal public opinion, to spring from lack of choice. Notes that Hitler had often before connected Jews with war, and the Final Solution was part of his war aim. The "prophecy" of 30 January 1939 was so important to him that he had it synchronically filmed and voice-recorded, a rare and difficult procedure at the time, and referred to it again and again in his wartime speeches. Stresses that while other Nazi leaders certainly shared Hitler's purpose, only he was in a position to initiate its implementation.
