Abstract:
Pp. 14-23 trace the history of the town during the Nazi period, including the Aryanization of Jewish businesses and the forced emigration of their owners. Describes the complex of labor camps established in the Landsberg-Kaufering area in 1944, where some 30,000 prisoners built the infrastructure for the subterranean production of jet planes, in full view of the surrounding German population. About half of the inmates died due to the hard labor and inhuman conditions; others died during the evacuation or were burned alive by the SS in the sick barracks. After the war the U.S. army established in Landsberg the largest DP camp in Germany, creating tensions with the local Germans. Pp. 109-134 in this book contain photographs of the labor camps and pictures of piles of corpses and of survivors, taken by the Americans after liberation.
Note:
Focuses on the Landsberg concentration camp during the Holocaust and the DP camp after the Holocaust.
