Abstract:
Describes the reception in Germany of Heine's poem "Lorelei". It was written in 1823, but the text became very popular due to its musical adaptation by Friedrich Silcher in 1838. "Lorelei" became a part of German national culture. Traces the attitudes of the German bourgeoisie to Heine, which, although they accepted him, considered his views as too ironic toward tradition. Both antisemitic circles and the progressive intellectual elite held the same view, that Heine corrupted German poetic language. Quotes German literary critics, from the 19th century through the Nazi period, who saw Heine as someone who does not belong to the German community and who corrupts German people. Focusing on the Nazi period, relates that his writings disappeared from school and university textbooks. It was difficult to totally erase such a popular song as "Lorelei" from German culture, but a solution was found: "Lorelei" was published with a note that the author is anonymous. Mentions that in Nazi-occupied France, Heine's name did not appear in publications on German literature.
