Abstract:
From 1929, Jewish-Muslim confrontations were recurrent in Constantine as a result of economic crisis, the rise of Algerian nationalism, and antisemitic propaganda from Palestine and Syria, influenced by Nazi and French right-wing ideas. Describes the pogrom which broke out after rumors spread that the Jews were burning mosques and killing Muslims. 23 Jews were killed, hundreds injured, and houses and shops destroyed. Anti-Jewish violence broke out in other towns of the area, indicating premeditation. Suggests the possibility of collusion by the authorities.
