Abstract:
The naturalization of Algerian Jews by the Crémieux decree in October 1870 was long believed to be responsible for the anti-French Algerian insurrection in 1871. Despite the claims of French antisemites, a parliamentary inquiry based on both French and Arab testimonies established that resentment of the decree was at most a secondary factor. The real causes of the rebellion were the reduction of the French military presence due to the Franco-Prussian war and the acts of the provisional government. The installation of a civil administration in place of the military threatened the power of the local Muslim aristocracy and they resorted to rebellion. Arab leaders declared themselves indifferent to Jewish naturalization. The version blaming the naturalization decree for the rebellion was forged later by enemies of the republican government and spread by the local press. Pp. 76-87 contain documents.
