Abstract:
Analyzes the writings of Primo Levi, especially "Se questo è un uomo" (1946) and "I sommersi e i salvati" (1986). Discusses changes in Levi's representation of the Auschwitz reality (based on his own experiences), and underlines the most significant messages in his works, such as the need to witness and to remember, and a consciousness that the Holocaust can be repeated. Reflects on aspects of his writings which provoked criticism and discussion (e.g. Wiesel considered that Levi relativized the victims as "possible executioners"). Deals with Levi's involvement in press discussions on the Holocaust and his responses to deniers, to articles by Nolte, etc. Concludes that Levi stressed the responsibility of the Nazis for the Holocaust, but refused to demonize the Germans as a people.
