Abstract:
A paper delivered at an international colloquium, June 1982. Jewish prohibitions regarding the meat, bread, and wine of Gentiles have always provoked reactions by the Christian authorities who, for their part, stressed the need for social separation between Christians and Jews. The Jewish dietary laws added a decisive touch to the already negative image of the Jew as moneylender, professor of a strange religion, and killer of Christ, who was identified by wearing the yellow badge, living in a special ghetto, and eating different food. The "food factor" was important in the worsening of Christian-Jewish relations within Provencal society between the 13th-15th centuries, when the Jews were subject to discriminatory regulations.
