Abstract:
States that the origins of this genre is somewhat unclear. The first preserved dialogue is Justin Martyr’s "Dialogue with Trypho"; however, the creator of the genre is generally viewed as Ariston of Pella (ca. 100-160), who is known only from a mention by Eusebius, but is presumed to be the author of "Controversy of Jason and Papiscus". The category of "anti-Jewish dialogue" is fluid and groups together works of various forms, sometimes copying other polemic traditions, such as Platonic questions and answers, collections of "testimonia", and anti-Jewish tracts. Discusses, also, to what degree the anti-Jewish dialogues reflect the reality that they claim to portray.
